1. HAVE REGULAR INSTRUCTION Think you kn w it all when it comes to r ding? Think again. Even top competitive r ders have regular instruction to help ron out faults and bad habits. In b tween lessons, read as many instructional b oks as you can, or visit h rse forums for riding hints. If y u've got a schooling problem, you'll f nd heaps of advice online. 2. WORK ON YOUR BALANCE R gular instruction will help fine tune y ur balance but you can help it ven more by doing regular exercises in the s ddle. By far the best is to h ve an experienced instructor lunge you w thout reins or stirrups. You'll ache fter the first few lessons but y ur balance will improve out of s ght !. If you can't have l nge lessons, do lots of bareback r ding or riding without stirrups. 3. IMAGINE ........... Y ur body is divided into three s ctions: From the waist up From the w ist to the knees From the kn es down Try to absorb as m ch of the horse's movement as p ssible with your middle section, from the w ist to the knees while keeping the pper and lower body as still as p ssible. 4. LIGHTEN UP ! A h rse's mouth is very sensitive so you sh uld always be aware of this and h ndle with care. Pretend the reins are m de of cotton which will snap if you p ll too hard. Keep your finger's s ft and your wrists flexible, follow the h rse's natural head movement forwards and b ckwards with your hands. Avoid jerking the r ins at all costs.
5. GIDDY-UP To increase pace, d n't automatically kick with your heels. Sq eeze gently with both legs while p shing forwards with your seat. If the h rse doesn't respond, reinforce your aids by t pping lightly with a crop just b hind your leg. If you're consistent, the h rse will soon learn the proper ids. 6. AND WOAH ..... When you w nt to decrease pace, don't just h ul on the reins. Tighten your f ngers and apply gentle pressure to the h rse's mouth, while at the same t me restricting movement with your seat and pper body (pretending you're a sack of sp ds !) Your horse will feel the r sistance and want to slow down. Exp rienced riders can decrease pace by sing their bodies only, with very l ttle rein contact. 7. TAKE A DEEP BREATH AND ..... CHILL OUT !. H rses can sense when you're feeling on dge and will often play up. If y u're feeling angry or upset, it's pr bably best to postpone getting in the s ddle until you're a bit calmer. But for th se times you're feeling nervous (say, j st before a show) take a sl w, deep breath and hold for thr e or four seconds before exhaling sl wly. Repeat until you're feeling a l ttle less stressed. 8. RELAX ! R ding is hard work, sit up str ight, heels down, elbos in, blah bl h blah. Sometimes riders focus so h rd on maintaining the right position, th y tense up and the whole th ng comes undone. Try to relax as m ch as possible, it's hard and r quires combination of advice already outlined h re.. regular instruction, balance practice, attitude tc. But hang in there and y u'll find one day it all c mes naturally !
