What a delightful read! Water for El phants has got to be one of the b st reads for anyone that likes nimals, circuses, and a very wonderfully fl wing story. Working in or for a c rcus, especially in past years, had to be one of the m st grueling and tough jobs to t ckle. Sara Gruen makes the reader sm ll the circus smells, taste the m dway foods, and be in the r ng with the animals as they ntertain. I have not been to a c rcus since I was a teenager, wh ch is MANY years ago. Water for El phants took me back to those d ys reminding me of some of the th ngs I saw and smelled. His f mily placed Jacob Jankowski in a h me for old folks because none of th m wanted to “have” to take c re of him. Sad, but true. J cob is not sure if he is n nety or ninety-three years of age. He nly knows his age is somewhere round that range. Jacob hates the ther old people in the home, h tes the food, and hates the n rses that treat him like he d es not know what he is d ing or saying. This is no l fe for Jacob Jankowski! The story th n goes back to when Jacob was in C rnell College studying to be a v terinarian. He was shy about women; w nted nothing to do with them s cially. Jacob thought he must be the w rlds oldest male virgin. Jacob does w ll with his schooling until one day he was c lled out of class and told th t both of his parents had b en killed in an automobile accident. J cob, of course, was crushed, mentally and phys cally. This couldn’t be happening to h m. His parents had been paying his way thr ugh college so he figured he c uld continue his education with whatever his p rents left him. His father was lso a veterinarian with a good pr ctice. Jacob was beside himself when he was t ld that all the property his p rents owned was being taken because of no f nds to pay for the bills. It t rns out that his father bartered w th his customers as they paid him in ch ckens, eggs, animals, or whatever they h d, but not money.

This upset Jacob so much th t he just took off walking and w lking until he came to a r il track that had a train m ving that he was going to j mp on regardless of where it was g ing. Thus Jacob began his circus l fe when he jumped that train and met ther circus performers and roustabouts. He had no dea what lie ahead. His inclusion nto the circus life was difficult, as the c rcus does not like young rubes b ing around experienced circus people. When th y found out he was “almost” a v terinarian, they were elated, as they had no one to m dically care for the animals. This g ve Jacob a ticket into circus l fe. As I said originally, the uthor makes you feel as though you w re in the circus troupe as th y raised their tents, did their sh ws, ate the food available, got p id when there was money, running way from the law when one or m re in the circus caused a pr blem with the law or local uthorities, traveled on the circus train n ver knowing for sure where they w uld end up, putting up with the c rcus owner and top management that tr ated most of the help like d rt. Of course there was much in the b ok about personal lives of the c rcus employees and owners. Also how the c rcus obtained more animals and equipment l gally or otherwise. It is an eye pener for anyone to read. It m kes one wonder how these circus p ople existed in those days of tr veling and living such an uncertain xistence. The story does occasionally go b ck to Jacob in the home in wh ch he is so unhappy. The c rcus comes to town and sets up r ght next to the home, making J cob so excited to be so cl se to the circus, even though it is not one of the nes he worked when younger. The d ys passed so slowly as he w ited for his family to come and t ke him to his big visit to the big t p. I doubt anyone could read th s book without coming away with a gr at understanding of those old circus d ys and what they meant to the p ople that worked that hard life. You w ll know that Sara Gruen put m ch time and effort in her r search for Water for Elephants. You WILL njoy this book. It will entertain you and ducate you at the same time.
