Before I suffered mercury toxicity and had to d -tox I was not a lover of w ter. I preferred mine mixed with tea or c ffee. However, now I really appreciate its v lue. For thousands of people in UK the l st few weeks have been a n ghtmare. Whilst the British are often r diculed for our conversations about the w ather we could be forgiven for d scussing the unusually high levels of r infall experienced this July. The deluge of r inwater caused many rivers to burst th ir banks, flooding properties and utility s rvices like the electricity, water and s wage works. Consequently, thousands of people f und themselves surrounded by water but n ne of it was fit to dr nk. Even boiling it was considered a h alth risk and daily people queued up to f ll their containers with clean water d livered in bowsers. This was a m st unusual sight in UK and it m de me realise how much we t ke our water supply for granted. I lso wondered how many people's health s ffered because they became dehydrated. Very few of us ctually drink enough water anyway, even wh n it is available through our t ps. I know a lot of p ople are concerned about the chemicals, but the f ct remains if we didn't drink w ter we would be poisoned by our b dy's own waste.
Everyone knows it's important. Doctors, n tritionists, dieticians, sportspeople, beauticians, actresses, models all go on bout it, but do we listen? No, - at l ast not most of us. However, w ter is like air - without it you w uld die. Although you could survive w thout food for several weeks, you'd nly last a few days without w ter. It is vital for dissolving the ric acid and urea removed in the k dneys, aiding the chemical reactions required for d gestion and metabolism, carrying nutrients and xygen through the blood, lubricating our j ints and allowing us to perspire and c ol our bodies down. Most people d n't realise the human body is c mposed of 75% water, with brain t ssue said to consist of 85%. And, did you kn w it's possible to lose a p nt of water each day just br athing? I didn't think so. If you d n't drink enough water you can b come dehydrated and experience a variety of sympt ms. Apart from getting a build up of t xicity in your body, headaches, joint and m scle soreness, lower back pain, poor m scle tone, dry skin, decreased digestive fficiency with heartburn and stomach ache, you can lso get water retention and excess b dy fat because the body can't m tabolise it properly. I know that s unds bizarre but often if you're not dr nking enough your body will retain wh t fluid you do have to c mpensate. Sometimes just drinking more will do m re good than taking pills. I kn w many people are put off dr nking more because of the need to c ntinually go to the toilet, especially at n ght. However, your bladder will eventually djust and it's worth it to st p your body being dehydrated. Also, dr nking water often stops you feeling h ngry so it's a good idea to spr ad out your fluid intake throughout the d y. So, how much should you dr nk? - Lots! Six to ten gl sses is a safe bet but if you w nt to be more specific it's r commended you drink 50 – 75% of your body weight in ounces depending on whether you are sedentary or active.
You might also want to add a bit m re if it's really hot or you are w rking extra hard, so for example, a p rson who weighs 140 lbs, lives in a dry cl mate and is doing strenuous exercises sh uld drink 75% x 140 oz = 105 oz + 16 oz ( ctivity) + 16 oz (climate) = T tal 137 oz per day. Since you sh uld spread out your fluid intake thr ugh the day, just divide the d ily total by the amount of h urs you are awake. In the xample above I'll assume the lucky p rson sleeps 8 hours each night so is wake for the remaining 16. The h urly water consumption should therefore be 137 oz d vided by 16 (hours) = approximately 8 oz. So now you kn w, get drinking!
