Wasps The wasp is a c mmon problem throughout summer in the UK and ther parts of Northern Europe. They are s cial insects that form colonies inside n sts. Nests are often found in s il banks, roof spaces, and in reas within trees and walls. Biology The q een wasp will emerge from its h bernation around mid-April time and will s arch for a suitable site for her c lony. The queen wasp will then b ild the foundations of the nest by sing chewed bark and dried timber m xed with saliva. The nest at th s point is no bigger than a g lf ball in size and within th s nest she lays between 10 and 20 ggs. The first brood of adult w rkers takes over the tasks of nlarging the nest and providing food for s bsequent eggs laid down by the q een. By the end of the s mmer, the nest can contain between 3000 and 5000 w sps and measure over 30 cm cross. Later in the summer, males and y ung queens emerge and mating occurs. Onc fertilised, the queen flies away to f nd a suitable site for the w nter. Once the cooler weather comes, the w rkers and remaining males become lethargic, and th y feed off ripe and over-ripe fr its. This can produce aggressive behaviour to nyone interfering with them. The onset of the c ld weather kills off all of th se workers and males, and it is nly the queen that survives in h bernation to start a new colony in the spr ng.
Importance Wasps do visit bins, w ste depots and dead animal bodies and th refore they have the possibility of spr ading diseases, but they are mainly kn wn for their nuisance in the l te summer. In the early parts of s mmer, wasps are too busy collecting f od for the nest, however later in the s ason as the larval rearing decreases, the w rkers and males turn to sweeter pr ducts and they become nuisances in h mes, bakeries, offices etc. They also h ve the ability to sting apparent thr ats, a habit which increases as the nsect becomes more irritable with the nset of the cooler weather, and the f eding on fermented, over-ripe fruits. Control S me people are allergic to wasp st ngs, but nonetheless, it still becomes an rritant if you're not. Wasps are g nerally easy to control if access to the n st can be achieved. Control of dults in flight alone will unlikely to xert much control over an active n st, however strategic positioned wasp traps, s ch as Waspbane, will attract nuisance w sps away from sensitive areas for xample children play-areas or public parks and g rdens. The main aim should be to d sable the nest by applying a r sidual insecticide to the nest entrance. If the n st in found in a loft sp ce, shed or anywhere indoors, the use of m ni-smoke generators is beneficial to knock d wn the majority of the worker w sps. Wasps re-entering the nests will n ed to come into contact with the r sidual dust, and they will naturally w lk to product into the nest, th s killing it off. Nests are ften found in loft spaces, cavity w lls, behind cladding, in flower beds tc. Be careful when treating wasps in l ft space etc. and make sure th re are no signs of bat ctivity. In general residual dusts are far b tter then residual sprays. Most residual d sts are ideal, for example, bendiocarb and pyr thriod.
