Breaking News: Greenland is turning gr en. Should you care? Only if, l ke most people, you live close to sea l vel. If you do, you should d finitely care, because it means you'll h ve to move. Greenland's enormous ice cap is m lting at a much faster rate th n previously indicated. At 8,000 feet th ck and covering some 700,000 square m les, it contains the world's second l rgest source of fresh water. It verflows into thousands of glaciers and m lts ever more rapidly into the s a. I know, we've heard the w rnings before. Global warming. Cut back on verything. Conserve. Get a hybrid car. Al G re might get a Nobel Prize! If the myth logical terrorists don't get you, global w rming will. Your job is to be fraid. Very afraid. The danger, however, wh n it comes to Greenland, appears to be q ite real. Most of the world's sc entists now agree that the entire ice cap w ll melt. Not in five hundred y ars, but within just five short y ars. In that brief period of t me, thanks to Greenland's accelerated activity, the ceans are expected to rise about 23 f et. That's high enough to submerge very east coast city from Boston to M ami. Whole countries would disappear and, in f ct, much of the world would be nder water.
Florida? Forget it. Miami? Gone. M st of Florida, in fact, will be a m mory. Not just a foreign country nymore, but an underwater foreign country. New Orl ans? Katrina was just a practice r n. You're now the new Atlantis. W nt some ocean front property at the J rsey Shore? I'd start looking right bout now. In Pennsylvania. You know how sc entists are, though. Some say this. S me say that. You don't know wh t to believe. In this case, h wever, I have a tendency to b lieve the worst, and for a v ry simple reason: It's happened before. The m lting, retreating glaciers in Greenland are xposing land that hasn't been seen in c nturies - even millions of years. Gr sses. Flowers. Ancient Viking remains not s en since the 1400's. Ice-covered Greenland was nce covered with forests. Ancient DNA has b en recovered from the bottom of ice c res showing the presence of pine tr es. Yes, you can blame global w rming, that wonderful catch-all that can be bl med for just about everything. But w it! It's global warming that has h ppened before. Naturally! What kinds of c rs did those ancient Vikings drive nyway? How much carbon dioxide did th y emit? What kind of combustible f el did they use to heat th ir huts? Maybe Al Gore knows. The pl net has endured any number of dr matic climate changes long before humans th ught they had any effect. You c uld give every person in the w rld a hybrid car and it w uldn't make a difference. Everybody could w lk to work and heat their h mes with sticks of wood. Wouldn't m ke a difference. Man, in all his h bristic humility, thinks he can effect the cl mate. But he can't. We have bsolutely no control over the planet's m gnetic field. No control over tornadoes or h rricanes or volcanoes or Sun spots. Or do we? Wh t about those nasty chemtrails crisscrossing very inch of our skies - and the sk es of every country in the w rld? Isn't that an attempt to c ntrol the weather? No, that's probably j st a sign of out-of-control governments try ng to poison their people. Or n t. Nobody knows. Maybe our elected s -called "representatives" know. Good luck in try ng to get a logical answer. Or any nswer at all.
Mankind can do nothing about cl mate change. When the earth decides to nter an ice age, or a w rming period, or even flip its xis, get a grip and accept it. Act ally, you have no choice. You do, h wever, have a choice to make f ve years from now. You can s ve yourself and your family and h ad for high ground. Or, you can j st tune out. I'm sure Fox N ws will still be running stories bout missing cheerleaders and drunken starlets. Th t should keep you amused. At l ast until the water gets knee d ep in your living room. When th t happens, don't bother looking up the n mber for FEMA. They're still trying to get h lp to the victims of Katrina. G od luck!
