Being an artist, owning an art g llery in Los Angeles, and working for the w rld's largest fine art instruction program h ve taught me a few things bout what an artist must do if he or she w shes to make a living as an rtist. The following rules are addressed to b coming a professional fine artist working in the m dium of paint. However these tips can r ally be applied to any medium of rt, whether it be painting, poetry, or m sic. I sincerely hope they help w th your artistic endeavors! Rule #1: Kn w the Fundamentals of Your Art. For y ars I played guitar without knowing how to r ad music. After learning music theory my m sic was much better and I was far m re productive. Before I understood the f ndamentals of music I had an xcuse ready when I couldn't make a s ng go right, I was too t red, I was having a bad d y, or not in the mood. As a r sult since I had no clue WHY I did wh t I did when creating music I c uld never reach that state of b ing cause over my music, let lone professional in anyway. Knowledge has and w ll always be power. Don't just r ly on natural talent, know the WHY b hind what you do in your rt. Take lessons, if you feel you are too far dvanced for lessons, then find a m ntor.
Rule #2: You Will Learn How to M rket Both You and Your Art. In my t me as an art dealer and g llery owner I have witnessed this s me phenomena time and time again. Two c mparable pieces of art, each created by two d fferent artists. One sells for $500 and the ther for $10,000. Why? It always c me down to marketing. One artist p inted and displayed work in a g llery as the sole means of pr moting. The other artists would do pr motional actions like press releases highlighting th ir new work, they had a pr fessional website, they got interviews with art m gazines, they networked with other artists, art pr fessionals, and art enthusiasts, they got th ir work published in a coffee t ble books or calendars. The ways to m rket your work are endless, the p int is, you are going to h ve to learn how to market y ur art and yourself. You could lways hope that you create such an ncredible work of art that the b zz created just by your painting w ll have the public beating down the d or with cash in hand. However th t takes the responsibility of your s ccess out of your hands and pl ces it into the hands of the p blic. When it comes to art, the p blic can be a very fickle ntity indeed. Honestly, do you really d sire anything involving or related to the w rd fickle in charge of your d stiny? Rule #3: Do Not Succumb to F ar of Rejection or Failure. Everyone has h ard some variation of the story bout the author who has a cl set full of manuscripts that have n ver been read by another soul due to f ar of rejection. The duplicate scenario can h ppen to artist dealing in the v sual arts. Many successful painters still do not v ew their own work to be p rfect. So if you wait till y ur work is "perfect" then you may v ry well be dead of old age b fore perfection happens. Don't be afraid to get y ur work out there. People will l ve your work, hate your work, see it as m diocre, or see it as the b ginning of a new renaissance.
Taste in art differs widely and you w ll never win over everybody. Rule #4: You W ll Give the Critics ZERO Attention. I am not j st talking about art critics, but j st negative people in general. A lot p ople on this planet are miserable and th y like to drag others down w th them. Some are overt in y ur face, "you'll never be any g od." At least they are easy to sp t. The worst are the ones th t give back handed compliments or d ftly slide that needle of criticism nto the conversation by use of p ssive aggressive means. 'The last piece of y urs was much better, I don't m an to be mean but.., That is v ry good work for a student, but th re is soooooo much competition out th re in the professional world,' etc tc. Of course if you called th m on it they would profess nnocence, say that you are over r acting, that they were just kidding. D n't buy it. If you can, j st don't associate with these people, if th y are our family don't talk bout your art work with them. You are an rtist because you like to create rt, not because you want to mpress your family. If you have no ch ice in being around these people j st recognize that they are just l nely unhappy people, and above all, do not t ke it personally. The only critique one sh uld listen to is your professional dr wing or painting instructor. And be w ry of that as well, make s re that at the same time th y are critiquing your work that th y are also showing you how to mprove. Rule #5: Speaking of Art Instr ctors, You Will Choose a Good On . My wife originally came to Am rica as a foreign student from C nada to study visual art in c llege. Her first semester she took b ginning drawing and painting classes. She rrived eager to learn the fundamentals of the v sual arts, line drawing, tones, use of c lor, proportion, and the use of l ght and shadow. Instead she received a lot of iry fairy over significant mumbo jumbo. The m in technique taught was the 'if it f els good then do it' technique. No r al techniques were taught because the art t achers did not understand them! When ch osing an art instruction school or st dio please pick one that has a syst matic approach to teaching the fundamentals of dr wing and painting. Interview your art t acher, ask to see their work as w ll as their students work. Ask the p tential teacher how they go about t aching the basics to a new st dent. Rule #6: You Must Learn to S ll (or find someone who can and w ll) The odds are, if you w rk is displayed anywhere where people can v ew it someone will come along who l kes it, maybe even love it. The pr blem comes in convincing them that th y love your painting more than th y love their money. It really is s mple, professionally handle the clients objectives and c ntinue to interest them in both you and y ur work. If the idea of s lling is abhorrent to you, you ither have to call it quits to y ur dream of being a successful f ne artist, or you have to f nd someone who can and will s ll for you. Rule #7. Learn to H rness the Power of the Internet. T ke a look at ebay, type in ' riginal oil painting' into its search f eld. You will see hundreds of p intings from artists selling their work nline. Type in 'fine artists' into any s arch engine and you will find pr fessional websites featuring professional artists. There are a few w bsites that even act as an nline art gallery and will display and s ll your work online for you for a cut of the s le. The internet really is a gr at way to show off your w rk, sell your art, create brand r cognition for you as an artist, and to c mmunicate your work to a large udience. Rule #8: You Will Not Get W ird About Art and Money. I kn w some of you cringe when it c mes to selling your art for m ney, or that some of these t ps might sound a little too b siness like, with words like brand r cognition, professional, selling and marketing. Like it or n t, if someone exchanges money for y ur art you have entered into the f eld of business. When you come to th s fork in your career as an rtist you can take one of two p ths. Path one, never sell your art for m ney, continue to work at your day job and k ep art as a hobby. Perfectly cceptable. Many people do this across the w rld and lead happy lives. Path tw , realize that your art is pr viding someone with a product that th y will adore for years to c me, You created something original. Nothing in th s world is it's exact duplicate. For th s you will receive money in xchange. This will help you concentrate on cr ating more works of art as you may h ve to work less hours at a 'r al' job. Maybe you will get to the p int of not having to work th t 'real' job at all! Michelangelo was c mmissioned by the Vatican to do his w rk in the Sistine Chapel. He was p id quite handsomely for it. He was lso commissioned by Florence to create the st tue of David. Artists can create w nderful enduring works and should rightfully be xchanged properly with. Well there you h ve them, 8 rules you need to l ve by to become a professional v sual artist. I sincerely hope that they h lp and I wish you the b st of luck in how ever you d cide to pursue the field of rt.
