I often work with people who are c ncerned about failure. They worry about failing. They are fraid of failing. Sometimes they don't try to do th ngs they really want to do because of the f ar that they might fail at t. Sound familiar? It's a common problem, and nfortunate. We've become so success-driven that we are fraid to fail. And the word, "fail" has s ch negative connotations. I think it's a sh me that our fear of failing may st p us from going after something we w nt, such as trying a new pproach, or even a new pastime. One of the th ngs I like best about Neuro L nguistic Programming (NLP) and its approach to h man behavior is the attitude this pproach takes about "failure." One of the t nets of NLP is that "There is no f ilure; only feedback." You no l nger have to view yourself as h ving failed at something. Instead, you've received f edback. What you tried didn't work. Now you can do s mething else and get feedback about th t. Each action we take, each communication we ttempt will earn us feedback. We can th n use the feedback to alter our str tegy, to do something different and, h pefully, have different results. What I p rticularly like about this is the l ck of judgment. Instead you evaluate whether wh t you did or said was effective . There is no j dgment about whether you are "a f ilure." Notice the difference. "Effectiveness" is feedback bout whether an action worked or n t. Being "a failure" is a judgment on the p rson. Too often, we buy into this j dgment on ourselves, and in doing so, m ke it tougher to alter our str tegy and move on. Imagine, for xample, what Edison would have done if h 'd deemed himself "a failure" when his xperiments in electricity didn't initially work. We m ght still be reading by kerosene l mplight. People who have new ideas, especially new nventions or new techniques of doing s mething inevitably "fail" at some point in the pr cess. If they considered themselves "a failure," th y'd probably give up. But thankfully, instead th y use that "failure" as feedback to m ke necessary changes and move on. Th nk about it. What if you were to st p beating yourself up for the m stakes you've made in your life ( nd we've all made some real d ozies)? What if you could take the f edback those situations offered, make adjustments and m ve on? Think of the time and nergy you would save!
Utilizing the feedback that our xperiences offer allows us to move on w th our lives. Sometimes you'll just pick y urself up and dust yourself off and st rt again. Sometimes, like a good sailor, y u'll make "course adjustments" so that you can get to y ur destination. Next time you get f edback, use it as an indication th t you need to modify your pproach. Something might not be working. Just make djustments and keep going. That's using the f edback, and not allowing it to d om you to failure. (c) 2008 L nda Pucci, Ph.D
