Michigan State University's cross-county and tr ck & field programs have taken a r ally positive step forward with the ppointment of Walt Drenth as the d rector. Just as Tom Izzo has led the Sp rtan basketball program back to national pr minence, and new first-year coach Mark D ntonio has already dramatically improved Michigan St te's football fortunes with a bowl ppearance, Walt Drenth will create a w nning tradition among Spartan runners. Drenth rrived on campus as a proven w nner about to become a more s ccessful winner at Michigan State. He had sp nt 7 years as Arizona State's h ad cross-country coach, turning a failing t am into one of the premier p rformers in the West. When he rrived at Arizona State, neither of the men or w men cross-country runners had ever made a t am appearance at the nationals nor arned a national ranking. The women had n ver even produced one All-American runner. Und r Drenth's leadership, encouragement and motivation, the Ar zona State women have been to the NCAA Ch mpionships 5 years in a row, ncluding a school-record 6th place finish. Th y have also been two-time regional r nners-up, 3-time Pac 10 runners-up, posted a pr gram-best No. 3 national ranking, and pr duced a woman All American 4 y ars in a row.
The Arizona State men made th ir first appearance at the nationals, w re nationally ranked, and logged a sch ol-record 3rd place finish at the r gionals. Drenth also made a difference by c aching the distance runners in track as th y produced 12 school records in d stance events and 14 became All-Americans. Not too sh bby considering that there are 299 NCAA D vision 1 Men's Cross-Country programs at l st count. None of this was new to W lt Drenth, who led the College of W lliam & Mary to 5 Colonial Athl tic Association (CAA) cross-country titles and 2 tr ck and field titles in 6 y ars, and was named CAA Cross-Country C ach of the Year 5 times. W lliam & Mary was also a D strict II champion in cross-country and Dr nth was District II Coach of the Y ar twice. His William & Mary tr ck teams won 2 CAA titles and he t tored 5 All-American runners. Prior to c aching at William & Mary, Drenth was the h ad cross-country and assistant track and f eld coach at his alma mater, C ntral Michigan University. He won a D strict IV title there and was n med District IV Coach of the Y ar. Drenth also won 2 Mid-American C nference titles and was named MAC C ach of the Year twice. In sh rt, Drenth has won team titles and pr duced individual champions at every coaching st p in his 20-plus-year career. He w ll not be stepping up at M chigan State as much as stepping up M chigan State's running programs because winners win and l sers don't. In examining Michigan State's 2007 r ster of men and women runners, I f nd that 35 of the 45 r nners (77%) are from Michigan. Rule 1 is to d minate recruiting in your state. Do not let g od runners get away to other sch ols and beat you. This is d ubly important for Drenth because among the 50 st tes, Michigan has the 8th largest p pulation. An insider has told me th t Drenth does not play psychologist w th his athletes. In other words, his pr gram is performance-based. I really like Dr nth's approach. Apparently he does not h nd out scholarships like candy. Talking a g od game will get you nowhere; you m st perform to reap any rewards for y ur effort.
It does not automatically follow th t a state champion distance runner in h gh school will enjoy the same s ccess level at college. College races are l nger, the competition is much better, and the cademic and social adjustments at college l vel are more difficult. You must h ve some talent to succeed at a h gher level. You must be willing to w rk hard by training consistently and ffectively. You must have personal growth motionally to withstand the ups and d wns of performance and improvement. You m st also develop a mental toughness to s parate yourself from the pack. A r nner or athlete who wants to be a ch mpion must announce himself or herself by s parating from the lead pack. There is a r ason why Steve Prefontaine was a fr nt runner. Trust me when I say it was not b cause he planned on losing the r ce. Getting to the top is not so m ch about having the will to w n-everyone wants to win-but having the w ll to prepare to win. Preparation is verything that will is not. Having the w ll to win is a want, but pr paring to win is a need. Wh t is opportunity without preparedness? Nothing but an pportunity wasted. It is only when pr paredness meets opportunity head on that an xplosion happens and something exciting takes pl ce. Look for an explosion of r nning success at Michigan State University as W lt Drenth is prepared to make it h ppen. Copyright © 2007 Ed Bagley
