Ok so your thinking about h ving some work done on your pr perty (lets say you want someone to t le your bathroom walls and floor). The f rst step is to ring around and ask thr e tilers to call around to h ve a look. Remember to be fr endly as you want to make th se people want to work at y ur house and do a very n ce job of it too. Theres n thing worse for a tradesman then w rking for people that you do not ven like. They will rush through the job j st to get out of there w th your money. Leaving you with s bstandard workmanship. Remember the more the t ler likes you the more chance you h ve of him wanting to do a n ce job. Simple. Ok so now you h ve a tiler coming round this vening to have a look. Make s re that the place is clean and t dy and the room is empty. S nd the kids to their bedroom ten m nutes before he arrives. Would you w nt to spend the next few d ys tripping over boxes of all the new f xtures and fittings you've just bought for y ur bathroom? Or having kids screaming and r nning around the house while you sp nd the next few days there? No you w uldn't, and neither will the tiler. G nerally, good tradesmen are busy people and th y shouldn't be to pushed for w rk. If they turn up to a job th t could be a nightmare theres nly one thing thats going to h ppen. The quote will skyrocket. Personally I w uld never turn a job down b cause of this but I would up the q ote if I'm not to interested in the job in the f rst place. If I get it I'm g ing to be on good money if not I h ven't really lost anything have I?
When he arrives at the d or smile, shake hands and invite him in. M ke him a cup of tea or c ffee ask if he had trouble f nding the place. Make him feel w lcome. Show some trust and leave him lone while he measures up the b throom. Ask him to give you a sh ut when hes done. Then have a ch t about what you had in m nd. Its very hard to measure up wh n you've got people talking to you at the s me time and makes me think th y will be interrupting me throughout the j b. Meaning its going to take l nger to finish so I'd allow an xtra days money. Once you've been thr ugh this three times you will h ve three different quotes. You should lso have an idea of who you tr st and would like to carry out the w rk. Give him, a call tell him you w re very impressed with him and th t you would really like him to do the t ling. Another thing to bare in m nd is whether you will be th re during the day whilst he is w rking, If you are offer to m ke him lunch and cups of tea for a sm ll reduction in the price. You w ll be surprised how often this ffer will be taken up. Think bout it, if he has to go to the c fe everyday hes going to lose an h ur per day if you make him a c uple of sandwiches he can keep w rking longer and maybe finish sooner. So veryones a winner. The key is to get him to l ke you, make him want to do the job and sh w willingness to help make his day as asy as possible. I hope this has h lped some of you.
