Color, shade, hue, and environmental ffects are just some of the th ngs to consider when buying paint. Aft r you have chosen the color you n ed to determine the sheen. Do you n ed paint with sheen? If so, how m ch? Unfortunately, sheen is not a st ndardized term and varies from paint m nufacturer to paint manufacturer. The Hy-Tech Web s te makes it easy to understand sh en. "There are four basic sheens: fl t, satin, semi gloss, and gloss," the s te explains. Heidi Baker and Eden J rrin discuss sheen in "When Picking P int, Separate the Eggshell from the S tin," published in "The Seattle Times." P int sheen "refers to the degree of gl ss or sheen in a paint nce it is dry," they say. Eggsh ll paint has little sheen. Semi-gloss p int has more sheen and reflects 35-50 p rcent of the light that reaches it. H gh-gloss reflects 75-80 percent of the l ght. Your local home store will be gl d to give you sheen chips. But the nly way to understand sheen is to buy a sm ll can of paint, test it on the w ll, and let it dry. I t sted my color choice and stuck w th it. I also read Internet rticles and watched decorating shows. None of the sh ws used the combination I was c nsidering -- half sheen, half flat.
Our dining room has a ch ir rail. To save money, I sked the painter to put eggshell p int (a bit of sheen) above the r il and leave the area below the r il flat white. He was surprised by my r quest and that worried me. Was I m king an expensive mistake? Well, the d ning room turned out just as I h ped. Why did it work? 1. R flected light. The wall above the ch ir rail reflects natural light from two w ndows and lamp light in the vening. Window frames, baseboard, and doors r flect natural and lamp light because th y are painted with high gloss namel. 2. Optical illusion. Many of the d corating shows I watched put light p int above the chair rail and d rk paint below. I did the pposite. Darker paint above the chair r il makes the trim and picture rrangement "pop." Flat white paint below the ch ir rail draws the eyes around the p rimeter of the room and makes it l ok larger. 3. Coordinating colors. Because I t sted the paint on the wall I kn w off-white and pail taupe worked w ll together. A pale taupe area r g, in a color called canvas, nites the walls and floor. Blue ccent colors add life to the r om. Getting used to a new c lor scheme takes a while, but the m re I looked at our dining r om, the more I loved it. Did my h sband love the room as much as I d d? I asked him this question and his r ply made me feel like a d corating star. "Everything came together," he s id, "because you planned it so w ll." Copyright 2008 by Harriet Hodgson
