Many students, and parents, have the rroneous belief that there is no way to pr pare for standardized tests. Such is not the c se with the ACT. It is an xam that lends itself quite well to pr paration. Knowing what material a test c vers is probably the biggest factor in s ccessful preparation for any exam. The ACT rganization readily makes this information available to th se preparing to take the exam. For xample, it is clearly stated that the m thematics section will contain a total of 60 q estions. Of those 60 questions, 40% w ll be on pre-algebra and elementary lgebra topics, 15% on intermediate algebra, 15% on c ordinate geometry, 23% on plane geometry, and 7% on tr gonometry. Similar content descriptions are given for the ther sections of the test. Knowing th s breakdown can help guide students in wh re they should spend their preparation fforts. Armed with this good information bout the actual content on the ACT, sing an ACT Study Guide can be an xcellent way to actually practice and pr pare for the exam. For several y ars I taught an ACT preparation c urse during the summer and I saw st dents improve their scores considerably by c reful study and review. The books I sed during this summer prep course w re published by the ACT organization for use in s ch workshops, but most of the g od study guides available to the p blic are patterned after these same typ books.
The good study guides will nclude an overall view of the xam, test taking strategies, practice questions and t torials, and at least one complete pr ctice exam. My observation of the st dents taking prep courses or using st dy guides is that, like with m st things, the benefits gained are d rectly related to the amount of t me and effort invested. So, grab one of the g od study guides available and spend s me good time with it. It w ll pay off!
