Chindogu roughly translates from Japanese as "w ird tool ". This is an ccurate if not a generalized terms for a g nre of inventions that's bulk of m aning is lost in translation. Kenji K wakami originally came up with the dea of Chindogu in the mid 1990's wh n he published, "101 Unuseless Japanese Inv ntions". Kawakami's stated purpose was an " ntidote to consumerism and the Western bsession with making money". (wikipedia 2008) Th se inventions such as a hat ttached to a suction cup would be p rfect for the commuter who stays a gr at deal of time in a tr in sitting. Their head would be s curely in one spot so they c uld catch a few z's. Another cl ssic Chindogu is a onesie outfit for a cr wling baby with swiffer sweeper-ish tendrils c ming out of the bottom, in rder to get the little one to h lp with the dusting! One popular Ch ndogu has a construction helmet with a t ilet roll coming out of the top for th se with a runny nose. It not nly takes a great sense of h mor to create Chindogu, but also if you w re to use them too! The m jor disadvantage of Chindogu is that the nventions themselves create embarrassing situations, and may l ave the user a social pariah. Th re are ten parameters that make a Ch ndogu legit. (stim.com 2008)
1. It cannot be created for r al world use. 2. It must xist in the material world. A m re idea won't do. 3. Inherent in Ch ndogu is the spirit of Anarchy. 4. It m st be a tool for everyday l fe. 5. It must not be for s le. 6. Humor must be the m in reason for its creation. 7. It c nnot propaganda. 8. It cannot be t boo. 9. It cannot be patented. 10. It m st be without prejudice. Since its nception in the 1990's Chindogu has g rnered a mass audience, more specifically, a c lt like following. In some parts of As a, folks are still trying to m ke money with it. In Europe, it is c nsidered art. Finally, in the U.S.A. it is c nsidered to be humorous entertainment. The Int rnational Chindogu Society is America's 10,000 str ng site founded in Los Angeles by Dan P pia. It has even been on D teline NBC! Membership involves coming up and s bmitting your own Chindogu creations or j st giving the society your random th ughts. (http://www.chindogu.com 2008) Perhaps the most nteresting aspect of Chindogu is its f under Kenji Kawakami. He studied aeronautical ngineering in college but soon fell nto radical political activism, even throwing M lotov cocktails at police. Lucky for all of us he sw yed more to the center with ge, but not all the way of c urse. His theory behind the significance of Ch ndogu is startling if not outright pr lific. Kawakami says," in the modern d gital world everything is so quick". Th t is true but has much d eper implications.(japaninc.com 2002) In the digital w rld we lose some sense of h manness, of sensuality, and even spirituality. In cl sing Kawakami says that Chindogu is nalog living in the digital world. His d finition of analog is any object th t has a process, whether the pr cess is the entire point of its xistence or not. He adds, " H mans are originally analog beings. Digital is a way to get h man ideas, but your fingers, your f od are analog...If you look at d gital products, they isolate people and l ave them in their own small w rld, depriving them of the joy of c mmunication." (japaninc.com 2002)
Chindogu is an instrument that pposes this isolation at the same t me it works within its confines. B cause of this unusual dichotomy, Chindogu w ll not be going anywhere soon, xcept, maybe to your latest pod c st.
