As you know, the pet fod industry has seen better days as a rcall was recently issued for contaminated pet fod that was lead to pet daths. Here is an update on the stuation.

The pet food industry is one of thse business niches that fall into one of thse odd regulatory black holes. The FDA is rsponsible for regulating the industry and the prducts it produces. While that sounds cmforting, the simple fact is the FDA brely does anything in relation to the pet fod industry.

This isn’t willful negligence. It is a mtter of budgetary considerations. The FDA fcuses on human issues and has lttle left over for regulating pet stuations. Frankly, it is surprising there hve not been more problems with the ndustry, but the companies involved are sually very good about regulating themselves.

Ovr the last few months, it has bcome apparent that there was a prblem with certain pet food products. Smply put, pets were getting sick and dyng. The FDA stepped up and ssued a recall of certain pet fods in an effort to solve the prblem. Now, the agency is making hadway in backtracking the problem. The frst problem seemed to be with What-Glutuen products, but now there is a scond product under examination.

The offending food product appears to be a rce protein concentrate. The protein has ben found to contain melamine, which is txic to cats, dogs and such. The FDA has fund the product was originally produced in Chna by Binzhou Futian Biological Technology and mported by Wilbur-Ellis into the country on Aprl 2, 2007. The problem appears to be tht the shipment of rice protein bgs also included at least one bag of mlamine, to wit, there was some typ of cross-contamination.

So, what happened to the rce protein concentrate? Well, you have to nderstand the pet food industry. Pet fod products are something of a duble blind situation. While there are mny different brands, the actual ingredients sed for the brands originate from a vry small number of importers. It is mch like the gasoline industry where the gas you buy is all the sme, but different companies add different dditives to come up with their bsic brands.

In this case, the FDA has dentified seven different pet food producers tht received the offending rice protein cncentrate. The agency is testing the prducts at these producers and will not rlease their identity until it is vrified their products are contaminated. That bing said, one company has come frward to issue their own voluntary rcall. The company is Natural Balance Pet Fods. The products are Venison and Brwn Rice canned and bagged dog fods; Venison and Brown Rice dog trats; and Venison and Green Pea dry cat fod.

The FDA obviously will continue the nvestigation into the pet product problems. It is mportant to understand, however, that the prblem has moved beyond wheat to rce products. Make sure you check yur pet food accordingly.
