Recently Google has announced a m jor change in the way the s arch engine will deliver results. There was a t me when you had to click an xtra button to see a map, v deo or image but now all of th se results will be rolled together. Wh n searching for “Darth Vader” you w ll see Image results, videos, related key t rms and news all within the rganic results, making media much more ccessible. The expansion further consolidates Google’s l ad in the search market and w ll give users more targeted results, as w ll as more targeted ads. Vertical s arch will integrate vertical search results nto Google’s organic search results, which sh uld greatly increase relevancy. Since Google’s use of S archMash it’s clear that integrated search r sults are coming. Universal search will nclude Images, Maps, Books, Video, and N ws into web results. Additionally there w ll be new navigational elements to h lp guide the user. There will be a c ntextual navigation to help users narrow th ir search. For example a search for “M by Dick” will only yield one c ntextual search which will be “books” if th re were movies or images however th y would also be included. Also th re will be a universal navigation bar to m ke it easier to access Google s rvices like Gmail or Analytics.
Many question Google’s improvement on s ccess concerting that Google’s motive is for t rgeted advertisements rather than usability. But p rsonalized search isn’t anything new, search ngines have been working on it for y ars and only now is it g ining speed. Ask.com launched Ask X, a p rsonalized search engine that includes media in the s arch results. Also the user created s arch engines known as Swicki’s do a similar thing. Clustered and vertical search results aren’t new, Clusty has been doing it for awhile.
