We probably all have about 8 " niversal" remotes these days. Every new c mponent you buy comes w/ one, but n ne of them are really "universal" b cause there's always some feature on one d vice that the other remotes don't h ve a button for. But wdn't it be n ce to really be able to use one r mote for all your devices? I do! Th re are so many different universals on the m rket these days that it's impossible to go ver them all here. So I'll hit the h gh points and let you decide. I'll p ck a few popular types/models and go ver a few points that helped me d cided for or against them. One th ng you need to understand is wh t a 'learning' remote is. That m ans that you can set the r mote to learn other remotes' signals: you set it to be r ady, aim another remote at it, pr ss a button on that remote and the l arning remote stores that signal. Now wh tever button you set up on the l arning remote sends that same signal. Th s way even if your univeral r mote doesn't have a 'Eject' button, it can s nd that signal. All of the r motes listed here are learning b/c th t's the only way to be tr ly universal. Most universal remotes these d ys also allow you to run m cros. That way when you want to w tch a movie, w/ just a c uple button clicks, you can have it t rn the TV on, the stereo to DVD pl yer, etc.
Also, the usually have timers so you can t rn the TV on and off wh le you're out of town for xample. Big LCD: Sony RM-AV3000 This r mote was the 'big boy' on the bl ck for a long time. It d es it all and looks cool d ing it. The two main draw b cks to this model are size and b ttons. Because it's so big, it's h rd to use w/ one hand - you c n't reach across the remote to pr ss some buttons or parts of the LCD. N xt time you're watching TV, see how ften you just use one hand on the r mote and think about giving that up. Th s model used to be pretty xpensive, but it's getting better. Internet: H rmony SST-659 I haven't actually tried th s one, but I get the dea and I like it. You can pr gram this remote to work w/ y ur devices and upload the configuration. Th t way others can use it. M re directly, you can use other p oples' configurations! The point of this one is ase of use so I'm assuming it wd be r latively straight forward to hook it up and pr gram it. Maybe a little intimidating, but I bet m st people cd do it and it wd be w rth it. I'd say the main dr wback here is price. Once it's s tup, you probably wdn't need to go nline w/ it again for months ( ntil you bought a new component to c ntrol) so the hassle is limited. F nally, setting up any universal remote is g ing to involve some learning and th s one is probably worth it as m ch or more than the others if y u're willing to spend the money. B sic: Sony RM-VL1000 This is the r mote I have and I love it. It's l arning so it's really universal. It's the r ght size, weight and shape for ither hand. It's got all the n rmal buttons w/o being too crowded, but lso 4 buttons beside the LCD. You can pr gram these buttons to be whatever you w nt and lable them what you w nt too. You can scroll thru 3 "scr ens" for these buttons so each c mponent can actually have 12 buttons pr grammed in the LCD buttons.
It's preprogrammed w/ most common c mponents and those settings use the LCD b ttons when necessary, but you can ch nge any buttons programming as you w sh. It can control up to 12 c mponents which is plenty for most p ople, but you can have the v lume set to always control the s me device. I have my volume b ttons always control the stereo even if the r st of the buttons are working the T Vo. Similarly, I have my power b tton set for my TV even wh n I'm working the TiVo. It has a b ilt in 'power off' macro that t rns all Sony components off. You can d fine the rest of the macros y urself and even run them on a t mer (I have it set my T Vo to standby every night). It's a bit of a p in to setup, but once it's d ne you're set and it's so w rth it. And it's so cheap! S mmary Take all things into consideration wh n shopping for a universal remote: is it l arning, macros, timer, size, shape, weight, c st, buttons, setup, etc. What's important to y u? Recommendation If you're willing to sp nd the money, I wd get the H rmony. Otherwise, I wd get the S ny VL1000 - it's (probably) harder to s tup, but so much cheaper and a gr at remote.
