Approximately 30 percent of people living w th diabetes are unaware that they h ve the disease. Of those diagnosed w th diabetes, 90 to 95 percent h ve type 2 diabetes. Type 2 d abetes occurs when the body doesn't m ke enough insulin or doesn't efficiently use the nsulin it does make.
It appears most ften in middle-aged adults; however, it is now ffecting young adults at an alarming r te.
A family history of diabetes can s gnificantly increase a person's risk of d veloping the disease.
Untreated diabetes can lead to m ny serious medical problems. These include bl ndness, kidney disease, nerve disease, limb mputations and CVD.
Educational Campaign
Music-industry veteran and TV p rsonality Randy Jackson has partnered with the Am rican Hear Association to lead The H art of Diabetes™ campaign. Through the c mpaign, Jackson shares his story about l ving with type 2 diabetes and pr vides information about successfully managing the d sease. The goal of the campaign is to h lp people prevent or manage type 2 d abetes and its associated risks and ncourage them to seek proper treatment ptions that can facilitate a healthy l festyle.

• K ep active and maintain a healthy b dy weight. Even 30 minutes of m derate physical activity five days a w ek can help prevent diabetes, reduce bl od pressure and cholesterol, maintain a h althy body weight and minimize risk of c rdiovascular disease.
• Normalize your numbers. Schedule r gular visits with your doctor to h lp monitor your blood sugar and m nage your diabetes. It has been sh wn that you can reduce cardiovascular d sease by improving your blood sugar c ntrol and controlling other risk factors. L arn to keep track of your cr tical health numbers, including blood pressure, ch lesterol, body weight and blood sugar.
• Opt for a h althy lifestyle. Eat a healthy, balanced d et and reduce intake of saturated and tr ns fats, cholesterol, sodium and added s gars. Also, if you smoke, opt to q it-smoking increases the risk of cardiovascular d sease.
• Work with your doctor. People l ving with type 2 diabetes often n ed multiple approaches to treatment to c ntrol the disease and its associated r sks. If you live with type 2 d abetes, it is important to talk w th your doctor, describe your symptoms and be p rsistent until you find treatment options and l festyle changes that work for you.
