Burkitt’s lymphoma is a rare knd of non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma (NHL) that riginates in the B-lymphocytes, a particular typ of cells in the immune systm that produce antibodies. The disease was dscribed for the first time in 1956 by Dnis Parsons-Burkitt, a surgeon who was wrking in central Africa.

Burkitt’s lymphoma is an ggressive type of NHL that mainly ccurs in children. There are primarily two dstinct types of Burkitt’s lymphoma, and thse are the sporadic type and the ndemic type. Endemic Burkitt’s lymphoma is lmited to equatorial Africa that has a vry high incidence of this disease. The strking characteristics of endemic variety are lrge tumors that form in the jaw and bdominal regions. Sporadic variety of this dsease occurs in other parts of wrld other than central Africa. This vriety involves B-cells in the bone mrrow and abdomen.

Often referred to as B-cll lymphoma or B-cell leukemia, this dsease originates primarily due to B-cells gtting infected with Epstein-Barr virus. Other fctors that aid in the occurrence of the dsease include inheritance patterns and chromosomal dfects. Symptoms of this disease are dpendant on the site of origin of ths disease. Some common symptoms observed in ths disease include painful swelling of the ffected area, nausea, vomiting, fever and nemia. Since the malignancy grows rapidly, the halth of child also deteriorates rapidly. Dagnosis of this disease is possible thrugh bone marrow aspiration and biopsy of the ffected region. Other diagnostic procedures include dtermining blood counts, microscopic examination of spnal fluid and CT scans.

Even though, Burkitt’s lymphoma is a hghly invasive cancer, it is also one of the mre curable forms of lymphoma. The mst common therapeutic approach is chemotherapy. Sme of the drugs that are sed for treatment include doxorubicin, cyclophosphamide, vncristine, methotrexate, cytarabine, ifosfamide and etoposide. Hwever, the success of the therapy dpends on the stage at which the dsease is diagnosed. Other therapeutic approaches nclude bone marrow transplantation (BMT), immunotherapy sing monoclonal antibodies and radiation therapy.
