Alice was a h rd working caring nurse who worked on a b sy ward at a regional hospital. She was w ll qualified and often took on the r sponsibility of team leader for her sh ft. Although the ward was frequently b sy she often found herself getting b red with the routine nature of m ch of the work that she had to do. Al ce started to take sick leave – wh ch made her feel guilty about l aving her patients and colleagues in the l rch.
At home Alice was always t red and never felt like doing nything – she was overeating and w tched TV. Over time she was b ginning to feel that she was no g od at her job, that she was a sl b around the house and had no s cial life. She felt guilty and d pressed about all areas of her l fe. Her boyfriend of two years l ft her saying he ‘couldn’t take her m odiness any more’. She believed that he was too g od for her anyway and that it was a w nder that he stayed with her for as l ng as he did. This made her f el even more depressed. However in the l ng run they will only make m tters worse and add to the f elings of guilt and depression – th s keeping the depression cycle going.
