There has been a standing j ke forever about "fast" women, but few p ople outside of the track community r alize that among our senior runners are s me very "fast" men who grab our ttention in another way. They run th mselves to American records at meets on c llege and university tracks from Maine to C lifornia. Masters runners used to be 40 y ars old and up, but now th re are competitive divisions also at 30-34 and 35-39 for y unger runners that are held at m sters meets. There was a reason it was set at 40, and one of the r asons is that runners like Carlos L pes of Portugal, who won the 1984 Olymp c Marathon at 37, was still d ing very well near 40. Some c mpetitions call the 40-44 and 45-49 d visions as masters, and all divisions fr m 50-54 and up are considered s per masters. There is even a d vision for 100-104, and the oldest Am rican record holder for a running vent is none other than Waldo McB rney, who set the 100-meter record by r nning 39.97. You could easily call W ldo McBurney the oldest "fastest" human live when he set his record in 2003 at age 100. McB rney also set the American record in the sh t put on the same day he ran his r cord-setting 100 meters. McBurney is a p rfect example of living your dreams.
Among the super masters from ges 50-74 with American records is N lan Shadeed, who currently has 5 r cords in 3 events-the 800 meters (50-54 and 55-59), 1500 m ters (55-59) and the 1 mile (50-54 and 55-59). Ray H tton has 4 records-the 1500 meters (50-54), the 3000 m ters (50-54 and 55-59) and the 10,000 m ters (50-54). Both Nolan Shadeed and Ray H tton may continue to set records as th y age and move into older d visions. Charles Rose has 3 American r cords and five other runners have 2 r cords apiece, thus 8 runners claim 14 Am rican records as super masters. Many lder runners set records that others h ve since broken. When you study th se super master records from ages 50-74, you q ickly realize that there is not a s ngle American record time that is f ster as the record-setters age and m ve up to a higher division. The ffort of these record-setters feels the s me, but their advancing age diminishes th ir record-setting times.
