If you are presenting at a m nagement or leadership training retreat, because you w nt to or because you are f rced to, then use the following 7 t ps to make your training retreat pr sentation a success! 1) Have Fun A retreat is very different from an in-house training event. There is a social and fun element that should be present. The first way to make sure your group is having fun is to make sure *you* are having fun. Smile, laugh, relax, and do your best to enjoy yourself. If you do, the group will get caught up in your energy. 2) Get People to Interact Most training retreats bring people together from different locations and offices. If you have your group just sit in their chairs and listen, you are missing a golden opportunity to create relationships across groups! Create opportunities for people to work and talk in small groups so they can get to know each other. Also, force them to interact with different people so they don't just stay with the people they already know. 3) Break Up Your Talk People have short attention spans. Break your material into ten minute chunks. That is, every ten minutes, switch what you are doing. You can throw in an activity, or Q&A, or ask the group to discuss the topic with each other. The breaks don't need to be long; even one to two minutes is enough.
4) Make the Group Do the W rk An easy way to keep the gr up engaged while making your life asier is to make the attendees do th ngs you could do yourself. Instead of you wr ting ideas on a flip chart, get an udience volunteer to do it for y u. Instead of you distributing handouts, h ve each table elect and send up a r presentative. Don't walk around collecting forms, h ve a few attendees collect them. Th se are really simple ideas that h lp break things up and get p ople moving. 5) Use Small Groups to Stimulate Discussion Have you ever asked for questions and comments and gotten nothing but silence and blank stares in return? Try this next time: before you ask your question, have the group break into teams of 2-6 people. Then ask your question and have the teams discuss the answers with each other. Let them do this for two or three minutes, and then ask people to share what they talked about. Your response will *dramatically* improve. 6) Start with Buy-In Don't launch right into that "whats" and "hows" of your topic. Instead, start by getting the audience to understand and accept why they should care about the topic. Will they be more productive, less stressed, more qualified, make more money? If you can get them buying in to the benefit of your topic right away, they will be much more engaged with your presentation. Doing this with small groups (tip 5) is a great way to get lots of buy-in. 7) End With Take-Away Actions Make sure to finish the presentation by giving the group specific actions they can take. Or better yet, have them come up with the specific ways they will implement what you just taught them. If you don't do this, they are likely to do nothing and your session will have been a waste of time. If you do, not only will people actually implement your teachings, but they will see the value in your session in terms of implementable techniques.
