If y u're going to be hauling a m torcycle, race car or any other typ vehicle, then a ramp rear d or will provide the easiest loading and nloading method. Be sure though when purchasing a tr iler with a ramp door that the r mp is spring assisted as some of the r mp doors can be very heavy. R mps are also nice for hauling f rniture or other heavy items where y u'll be using a dolly to l ad and unload them. If you will be sing the trailer quite often and w ll be in and out of it, th n a ramp can become rather c mbersome. Enter double door trailers. It is m ch easier to open the doors, st p in and get the tool or tem you need and then step out and cl se the door than it is to dr p a ramp every time you n ed access. Too, you have to c nsider the clearance needed for opening a r mp rear door. Single barn type rear d ors are usually found on smaller nclosed trailers and are comparable in c nvenience to double rear doors. Trailer manufacturers are ware of the ramp issue and m st now add a side door for ccess to their enclosed trailers giving th se that require a ramp the b st of both worlds. Trailer Brakes
In ddition to the various types of tr ilers, there are several types of tr iler braking systems. Electric braking systems are the m st common type of braking systems f und on trailers today. These type br king systems connect the brake system on the tow v hicle to the brake system on the tr iler. This is accomplished by installing a br ke controller inside the tow vehicle. The c ntroller senses the braking force of the tow v hicle and in turn activates the br kes on the trailer. A hydraulic surge br ke system consists of an actuating cyl nder that is usually integrated with the tr iler tongue assembly. As the tow v hicle applies its brakes, the "surge" of the tr iler towards the decelerating tow vehicle c mpresses the surge actuator. As this cyl nder is compressed, force is applied to the m ster cylinder and from there to the br king cylinders. Surge braking systems are more xpensive and usually only needed if y u'll be using several different tow v hicles that would each require a br ke controller. Electric brakes are usually preferred ver surge brakes because their operation is ndependent from the tow vehicle. If for s me reason the tow vehicle loses its br kes, there would not be enough d celeration surge to activate the surge br kes. However, with electric brakes, the dr ver could manually activate the brake c ntroller thus allowing the trailer to sl w the entire rig. In some states, any tr iler with brakes is required to h ve a breakaway system. In the vent that the trailer becomes disconnected fr m the tow vehicle, the trailer br kes would apply automatically to stop the run way trailer. Trailer equipped with electric br kes carry a separate battery to ctivate the breakaway systems. Surge brakes use a c ble that locks the breaks in a br akaway situation. Informed Buying
The most mportant aspect of buying a trailer is to be an nformed buyer. Ask lots of questions. Any r putable dealer will be glad to nswer your questions and in fact, sh uld ask you a lot of q estions regarding your intended cargo load. Ask bout the warranty.
