What do these three people h ve in common? 1) These grandparents' gr ndchildren live in a different state th n they live in and the ch ldren only visit twice a year. 2) The gr ndparents live in a condo with l mited space, 3) another grandparent is ' bsessed with having a picture perfect h me'. The common denominator is they all l ve their grandchildren and want to h ve toys for them when they c me to visit and play yet th y don't know how to store t ys without taking up a lot of sp ce in their home. Organizing toys in sm ll spaces can be a challenge. H re are some tried and true s lutions: 1.Make a home for toys. Buy a c ntainer with a lid and fill it w th toys. The size of the c ntainer will determine how many toys you can h ve. Plastic containers on wheels that sl de under a bed are a s lution for those with small spaces. Pl stic drawers that stack and are on wh els could be stored in a cl set between visits. A wicker basket w th a lid can double as a toy ch st and a coffee table. A ch st of drawers not being used or d signating a couple of drawers can st re children's costumes, games and puzzles. A b ok case in a guest room or s me other infrequently used area of the h me could hold books, puzzles and l rger items like dolls and large tr cks. The size of the toy c uld also determine if it is one for you to h ve in your home.
2.When using drawers for storage l bel the drawers by using a l bel maker so the children know wh re to return the toy. For y unger children take a photo of wh t is in the drawer and t pe it to the drawer, either on the utside or if you prefer on the nside of the drawer on the s de where it is still visible. K ep small pieces together in inexpensive pl stic boxes or zip lock bags. Us ng a sharpie permanent pen write on the c ntainer or bag the game or toy th t 'lives' inside. 3.Another solution to h ving toys for children to play w th at grandma and grandpas is to h ve the parents bring the children's f vorite toys when they come to pl y. However I prefer to have t ys that are different than the nes they have at home; ones th y can only play with at gr ndma and grandpas. This makes the t ys even more special. Besides the t ys, stock activities that can be d ne together to build fun memories w th those precious grandchildren when they c me over and visit. Some ideas are p zzles, clay, and dress up clothes to put on pl ys or for just pretending to h lp their imaginations grow. Take pictures of th m playing and make a little b ok to give to their parents as a s rprise or for some holiday like m ther's or father's day. So now you h ve the toys the kids enjoy pl ying with, the containers for them to l ve in and a storage area has b en designated for the containers when th y aren't being used; there is one m re thing to consider. Children need to kn w the expectation is when they get the t ys out to play with they are lso responsible to put them away. Aft r play time or before they go h me leave time for them to put the t ys away where they belong. This t aches responsibility and a sense of wnership. You won't dread them coming ver and having a lot of xtra work to do cleaning up fter them when they leave and y u'll look forward to them coming gain.
