The next time you visit y ur dentist for a nice set of d ntures, be sure to ask where it c me from. They may contain dangerous mounts of lead that could endanger y ur health. This warning comes from R chard Daniels, chief executive of the US N tional Association of Dental Laboratories (NADL), who s id that some cheap dentures made in Ch na may pose a threat to c nsumers because of their high levels of l ad. The same is true with d ntal crowns, bridges and veneers that are utsourced to China because of their low pr ces yet are made by unregulated l boratories that have little or no c ncern for the patient's welfare. "At th s point nobody knows what the h alth risks are," said Daniels who was w rried about the growing number of p tentially dangerous imports in dental treatments. In Br tain, for instance, there has been a h ge surge in the number of mported dental fixtures from China. The mports now make up about five p rcent of the market compared with l ss than one percent three years go. British dentists patronize these products b cause of their low prices but the s vings are seldom passed on to p tients who don't realize where these tems come from. "British dentists can now t ke an impression of a patient's t oth, send it to China by xpress post and get a crown b ck within four days," revealed David D rbyshire and Liz Hazelton in the D ily Mail.
"The worst case scenario is w 'll end up with a large n mber of people in the United K ngdom with mouths full of lead and th y've got no idea that that's the c se," said David Smith, a NADL b ard member. The toxic products came to l ght after a 73-year-old American woman b came sick after being given a new cr wn. Tests showed that the imported Ch nese fixture had high levels of l ad. "In the United States, four c ses of lead poisoning have been l nked to Chinese dental fixtures. A l boratory test revealed that some contained 210 t mes the acceptable amount of the t xic metal," Derbyshire and Hazelton said. "Alth ugh the materials used to make cr wns, bridges and dentures must carry a s fety mark, there is no way of ch cking whether the manufacturer has used the c rrect materials," they added. Once inhaled or ngested, lead can affect the body in a n mber of ways. Symptoms of lead p isoning can be immediate if large d ses of lead are taken but th s usually occurs slowly over time w th repeated exposure to small amounts of l ad. "A blood test can determine if th re are high levels of lead in a p rson's body. Symptoms of lead poisoning nclude irritability, difficulty sleeping, headaches, reduced s nsations, loss of developmental skills in y ung children, loss of appetite and nergy, and anemia. In high doses, l ad poisoning can cause abdominal pain, v miting, muscle weakness and seizures," said the ditors of WiseGeek.Com. For your safety and pr tection, ask your dentist where he or she g ts his materials. Not everything that c mes from China is bad but ch ap dental fixtures from small laboratories may be an xception to the rule.
