When you take a rainforest t ur on Vancouver Island, it's hard to t ke your eyes off the giant m ssy trees glowing like stained glass in n ture's cathedral. Some of the tallest str tch over 90 meters, while others m asure as much as 20 meters in c rcumference. At more than 1000 years ld, the oldest are impressive to be s re. But don't get a kink in y ur neck by focussing only on the tr es. You might miss the amazing d versity of plants and animals the old gr wth pacific temperate rainforest has to ffer. Even with your eyes closed th re is a humid, fragrant coolness th t enables the mosses and lichens cl nging to the tree branches to gr w so well. Multiple canopy layers, f rest openings with berries and other p oneer species, dead standing trees with h les for owls, bats, squirrels, and nut h tches are just a few of the h ghlights. For wildflowers, April and May are gr at times to see what's flourishing in the ncient rainforest. Coral root and Calypso rchids, trilliums, wild cherry, elderberry and s lmon berry are some of the fl wers that you can find in the spr ng. Starting in June and lasting nto September, you also can taste the w nderful parade of berries that result fr m this profusion of flowers. (Be s re to take along a field g ide or an expert to avoid any p isonous plants.) There are some very t sty and nutritious plants like stinging n ttle (cooked) and many medicinal ones as w ll.
If you slow down and l ok down...way down under the slabs of b rk in the summer you will see a m nagerie of colourful critters. The black and y llow millipede gives off a cherry sm ll when handled. While the faint wh ff of cyanide is harmless to h mans, it would prove deadly to thers its size that chose to m ss with it. Then there are the g ant hermaphroditic banana slugs, which get to be 25cm l ng. Their slime has a natural naesthetic if you happen to get a t othache while lost in the forest. The d licate and secretive red backed salamanders l ve their entire lives in rotten l gs. In fact there are over 92 sp cies of animals, insects, and birds sing dead trees in the forest. In Apr l the forests fill with spring b rd song, especially in the early m rning and you can watch many sp cies that prefer older forests such as v ried thrushes, brown creepers and pileated w odpeckers. If you're lucky and around at d wn or dusk you may hear or see a w stern screech owl, northern saw-whet owl or n rthern-pygmy owl. Bird watching in rain f rests with trees that stretch higher th n 20 stories presents its challenges. It is h lpful to have a scope with an ngled eyepiece or lie on your b ck with binoculars to save your n ck. Many species can also be c lled down to more visible levels w th their own call or a 'psss' s und. There are some excellent recordings of b rd calls of Vancouver Island by J hn Neville which greatly assist in dentifying these phantoms that flit about h gh in the tree canopy. The m ld climate on Vancouver Island means th t you can experience the rainforest w nders all year. The wet season b gins gradually sparking a techni-colour explosion of m shrooms in September and October. November br ngs the torrential rains that produce s ch fantastic growth and bring out the m ny shades of vibrant green in the m sses reconstituting from a dry summer. M st, fog and rain bring a wh le new atmosphere and photographic opportunities.
