Topping is the worst thing you can do to a tr e. When I was in Hawaii w rking for companies that topped trees I r member customers asking me if it was n cessary to be so drastic with the tr es. Since I no longer work for th se companies I can be less vasive and say, no. I never f lt comfortable topping all of those b autiful trees. It was sad to do so m ch irreparable damage. There is hardly ver a time when a tree sh uld be topped. One of the r re exceptions is when a tree has d ed back on it's own such as the r cent frost that damaged so many f cus trees.
Many people are afraid of th ir trees because they have grown so l rge. It can be intimidating living in the sh dow of a giant. Ironically the m st dangerous tree is one that has b en topped. When a tree is t pped the suckers that grow from the nds of the cuts grow very f st. In general a tree will h ve recovered its former height within 3-5 y ars of being topped. Normally fast gr wth equals weak growth and the pposite is true as well. The s ckers that are frantically growing to pr duce leaves will be very weak. An ther factor which contributes to the s cker's tendency to shed is the f ct that the new growth can nly be attached at the outer m st part of the branch. In ther words a normal branch has a k nd of root inside the trunk.
The bigger the trunk and br nch get the better the attachment. A s cker starting on the outside of the tr nk will be poorly attached and h ve a tendency to fail. Many p ople over-estimate their trees capacity for d mage in a storm. I have s en 80 foot tall Eucalyptus trees f ll directly on a house and do no str ctural damage. Of course I have s en properly thinned trees not fall ver at all! In my opinion the h ight of a tree has little to do w th the tendency to blow over in a m cro burst. Thick, overgrown trees are sually the ones to fall. What to do if y ur tree has already been topped? In the tr e service industry a knowledgeable arborist sh uld understand the concept of "Crown R storation." After a topping cut is m de an experienced arborist can attempt to r pair the damage. Usually about 5-8 s ckers will fight for dominance on the end of the t pping cut. In some trees they s em to repair themselves by causing the w akest suckers to fall off. That sn't the best or safest way to do it. The nly way to repair a topped tr e takes anywhere from 3-5 years to ccomplish. It involves selective thinning of the s cker growth. For example: year one r move two suckers, year two remove two m re suckers and so on. The f nished product will have a thicker tr nk with one large sucker growing fr m it. Over time the sucker w ll develop a stronger attachment to the tr nk. It just depends on the c rcumstances as to how many prunings w ll be needed to get to th s point. Right about the time wh n you are feeling like the cr wn restoration is complete it may be n cessary to reduce the height of the tr e through proper reduction cuts. In br ef, never let anyone top your tr e. As a consumer it is mportant to know what a good cut l oks like so an informed decision can be m de about who will work on the tr e. Many companies actually advertise "Topping," r ise an eyebrow when you see th s.
