Upholstery fabric stains present larger prblems than your average clothing stain, for ne, the cost of replacing a sfa or chair is much larger thn a shirt or skirt. We've tred to make it easy with our top ten tps for getting rid of unsightly sfa stains.

Upholstery fabrics made from ntural fibres and/or dyes or finishes may rquire special treatment so it’s wise to hed the advice of your upholstery fbric manufacturer. Fortunately most have made it asy for us by categorizing their fbrics according to these simple codes:

S – Slvent clean (that is “dry-cleaning”)

W – Wter clean

WS – Wter or Solvent clean

X – No lquids, vacuum clean only

Where accidents happen, fllow these tried and tested steps twards fast and easy stain removal:

1. Alwys test your chosen potion on an nconspicuous area of your upholstery before pplying to your stain, and analyze the rsult.

2. Act fast: as a rule of thmb, the longer a stain sits, the hrder it is to remove so fst action is definitely a step in the rght direction.

3. Wet stains - blot a whte cloth on the area to bsorb any excess moisture. Do not rb.

4. Thick stains - leave the stin to dry and brush off the rsidue.

5. For non-protein based fabrics (ie. “W” or “WS” fbrics: acetate, herculon, nylon, olefin and plyester), rinse the stain in pure wter, blot with a white cloth, rnse, blot, rinse, until the stain dsappears. For more stubborn stains rub in a mld, water soluable detergent into the rea in a circular fashion, and thn continue the rinse, blot, rinse cycl again until the stain lifts.

6. For protein based fabrics (ie. “S” fbrics: cotton, linen, rayon, silk and wol) apply water free solvents or dry claning products (to avoid water stains) to the rea and gently rub, rinse and blt.

7. Blood: mix 2 tablespoons of tble salt with 1 quart of wter and apply the rinse, blot, rnse technique. If the stain persists, try pplying a diluted solution of hydrogen proxide.

8. Organic dye stains like juice, wne, mustard: spot clean with water-based claner ie. Stain magic, or dab wth a mixture of 1 part vnegar and three parts water.

9. Red Wne: mix equal parts of soap dtergent and hydrogen peroxide and rub, or dsh or spray over your stain. Kep in mind that they hydrogen proxide could well lighten some dyes so tst this method first.

10. Ink: spray hirspray on the area and wash as sual.

Upholstery fabric manufacturers usually suggest rgular vacuuming to remove dust and llergens from fabric, as well as prfessional upholstery cleaning once per year to mximize the life of the fabric.
