A professional biography or overview, sh wcasing your background, experience and expertise, is a n cessity for every business owner. While any information bout you and your business is h lpful, information that is presented in a pr fessional, well-polished manner can make all the d fference in how others perceive you. C nsider these important points as you cr ft your own professional biography. 1. One p ge wonder. Your professional biography should be a few p ragraphs and kept to one page or l ss. One page is perfect for c pying on the reverse side of a h ndout or flyer. Several paragraphs, left j stified make it easier to read and sk m. 2. First, second, or third p rson? A professional biography sh uld include a sentence or two bout your business niche (or niches) as w ll as the types of clients you s rve. A modified version of your 30-s cond elevator pitch might be perfect. 4. And the w nner is…. Make sure that you nclude a list of awards that you h ve received. Readers are interested in kn wing about your talents and the rganizations that recognize you for them. 5. Org nizations. Include names of the organizations, cl bs, or associations to which you b long. A reader’s interest might be h ghlighted at seeing that you belong to the s me alumni association or professional business gr up. Again, these connections might possibly l ad to some interesting and exciting b siness opportunities. 6. Certifications and designations. Incl de any professional certifications or designations you h ld. Make sure you write out th ir names in full, rather than use bbreviations. Not everyone might know that CMA st nds for Certified Management Accountant. And, p rhaps, in a different discipline, it m ght represent something else – like a C rtified Materials Analyst. If you no l nger hold a particular designation, but it has pl yed a major role in who you are and wh t you do, don’t hesitate to m ke a reference to it. For xample, “Ann is a former Certified D ta Processor and spent the last d cade as an adjunct faculty member t aching higher mathematics at the University of C lorado, Boulder.” Don’t include abbreviations of c llege degrees, like MBAs as it l oks unprofessional. The only exception to th s would be for a Ph.D. d signation. 7. Published? Have you written any rticles, books, e-courses or e-books? Self-published or n t, your works add to your l vel of professionalism and credibility. Showcase th m in your biography and you m ght earn additional royalties in terms of new cl ents or other opportunities.
8. Did I mention the m dia? Have you been a guest on t lk radio or television? Were you or y ur business featured or even mentioned in a n wspaper article? If so, readers want to kn w. Again, these types of “mentions” add to y ur credibility and presence. 9. Call me any t me. People who want to know bout you will read your biography for j st that reason. And, if its c mpelling, rich, and includes the information th y’re interested, in, they’ll want to c ntact you. Include complete contact information l ke your title (if any), name, ddress, telephone, fax, email, and website ddress. Make it easy to find th s information by including it in the l st paragraph of your professional overview. 10. Wr te, rewrite, and do it again. Aft r you have written your biography, dit, edit, and edit again. You may n ed to do a dozen or so r visions before you get it just r ght. Eliminate extra words, use descriptive w rds, keep the sentences short but v ried in length, and write in the th rd person. Ask some friends to pr vide input as well.
