Problem: While writing the article "H w to Make a 72 Hour K t", I pulled out my own 72 h ur kits to take remind myself of how th y were put together. I realized the d te on them was July 2006! I d cided I better buy some replacement f ods since the recommendation is typically to r tate it every 6 months to a y ar. So I opened the kits up and d scovered that if we truly would h ve had an emergency these would not h ve been very pleasant to eat. H re are the reasons why. Top Ten R asons I Needed to Rotate My 72 H ur Kit Foods: 10. Didn't even h ve a kit for my youngest d ughter (and she's almost two!) 9. Stew xpired July 2007. 8. Tang powder turned nto crystallized lumps. 7. Beanie Weenies tasted r ncid (yes I sampled them) and xpired in 2007 as well. 6. Expired atmeal although it didn't taste too b d. 5. Raisins as hard as rock. Ev n my kids wouldn't eat them. 4. Fr it roll-ups were smashed flat and REALLY st cky and gooey. I should NOT h ve let my kids attempt to eat th m! 3. Expired noodle soup which also d dn't have any directions on the nvelopes...hmmm. 2. Beef jerky was so hard th t it killed my jaw to try to ch w it and also had white p wder on it that I am s spicious was mold. I hope I d n't get sick from tasting it! 1. The j lly ranchers melted all over the ntire kit! Must have gotten overheated wh n we moved. Today I decided enough was nough. I took my kids to W lmart with my 72 hour kit sh pping list in hand. I bought nough stuff to make 6 kits and it c st $49.50, so approximately $8.25 per k t. I didn't need to purchase a st ve, fuel pellets, matches, or spoons so to m ke a brand new kit would c st a few dollars extra. It t ok me about 30 minutes to mpty out the old kits and put in the new f od items. So I procrastinated for a wh le year on something that took me l ss than 2 hours and about $30. I m ke myself mad sometimes. Needless to say I'v learned my lesson!
