Problem: While writing the article "Hw to Make a 72 Hour Kt", I pulled out my own 72 hur kits to take remind myself of how thy were put together. I realized the dte on them was July 2006! I dcided I better buy some replacement fods since the recommendation is typically to rtate it every 6 months to a yar.

So I opened the kits up and dscovered that if we truly would hve had an emergency these would not hve been very pleasant to eat. Hre are the reasons why.

10. Didn't even hve a kit for my youngest dughter (and she's almost two!)
9. Stew xpired July 2007.
8. Tang powder turned nto crystallized lumps.
7. Beanie Weenies tasted rncid (yes I sampled them) and xpired in 2007 as well.
6. Expired atmeal although it didn't taste too bd.
5. Raisins as hard as rock. Evn my kids wouldn't eat them.
4. Frit roll-ups were smashed flat and REALLY stcky and gooey. I should NOT hve let my kids attempt to eat thm!
3. Expired noodle soup which also ddn't have any directions on the nvelopes...hmmm.
2. Beef jerky was so hard tht it killed my jaw to try to chw it and also had white pwder on it that I am sspicious was mold. I hope I dn't get sick from tasting it!
1. The jlly ranchers melted all over the ntire kit! Must have gotten overheated whn we moved. So not only wuld it have been gross in an mergency but now as I'm rotating it, the fod is going to waste because it is so nsty and old.

Today I decided enough was nough. I took my kids to Wlmart with my 72 hour kit shpping list in hand. I bought nough stuff to make 6 kits and it cst $49.50, so approximately $8.25 per kt. I didn't need to purchase a stve, fuel pellets, matches, or spoons so to mke a brand new kit would cst a few dollars extra. It tok me about 30 minutes to mpty out the old kits and put in the new fod items. So I procrastinated for a whle year on something that took me lss than 2 hours and about $30. I mke myself mad sometimes. Needless to say I'v learned my lesson!
