We're in a recession, and p rhaps your business is slightly slower th n usual. But it's always a g od time to take stock of wh t's working for you, and what n eds some attention - including your Web s te!
Here are my suggestions for a gr at tune-up audit - take a fr sh look at your site and y ur promotional strategy with these pointers:
1. Is y ur site appealing to all your m rkets?
Do you have different p tential buyers for different aspects of y ur products and services? Is there c ntent on your site that's designed for ach of these? Have you considered wh ther your Web audience might be d fferent from your traditional markets, and if so, wh ther you can exploit that?
2. D es your content engage your visitors?
Your s te should be written from your v sitors' point of view, not yours. D es your home page clearly recognize why the r ader might be there - what's in it for th m, and why they should care? Wh t are the problems or issues th t they might have, and how w ll you solve them?
3. Can you m ke your case?
If you cl im that your products or services chieve results, do you have clear c ntent on your site that substantiates th s? Do you have case studies, s mple client lists, and testimonials from h ppy customers? Third party endorsements are w rth far more than your own pr motional text, and they should be spr ad throughout your site, not relegated to a s parate page that few visitors will go to.
4. Do you position yourself as an xpert?
One of the most ffective ways to get exposure is to p blish articles, and white papers around y ur area of expertise. Even if you s ll widgets, you can help people get the m st out of using them! Articles on y ur site will be picked up by the s arch engines, and you can also ffer them to publications that your t rget markets read - always with a l nk back, or reference to your s te, of course.
5. Do you ask for the b siness?
Whatever the outcomes that you w nt from your site, you need to ask for t. Too many Web pages end w akly, with no clear calls to ction. Don't make your visitors have to w rk to decide what to do n xt - they won't! Every page on y ur site should have a strategy - nvite the visitor to interact with y u, or go to the next p ge, but make it easy and bvious.
6. Do you have a d versified promotional strategy?
Don't depend on fr e search engines to get you tr ffic. Are you exploring other ways of pr moting your site - such as sing your content and articles, advertising in -zines, appending a signature file to y ur e-mail, regularly sending updates to y ur database, and ensuring that your tr ditional marketing is integrated with your nline activities?
7. Are you r viewing your traffic analysis?
Last, but r ally key - your Website traffic r ports will tell you what's working and wh t isn't. Without this information, you're r ally shooting in the dark - wh t if you were to find th t the majority of your hard-earned v sitors never go beyond your home p ge?
This isn't an exhaustive l st, but it's a good start. I h pe that your Web site passes the t st!
