It's the middle of summer, yur kids are home with you ALL DAY lng. They're probably unintentionally diverting your ttention from your writing.

It's a bautiful, sunny day and they are nsisting that you turn off your cmputer and come outside to play wth them or take them to the pol or the park. The temptation nd/or frequent requests from your beloved lttle ones is enough to distract you - lng enough that you lose your trin of thought...

Or perhaps it's a drary, rainy day and your kids are stck inside the house, tired of wtching cartoons, bored to tears, bouncing off the wlls and begging you for "something to d..." (despite the fact that they hve a room full of toys and gmes that they could play by thmselves...) You can only respond to thir repeated requests for your assistance a hndful of times before you inevitably fil to be able to focus on yur writing effectively...

If either one of thse scenarios sounds familiar, you may fnd yourself eventually facing the dreaded "Wrter's Block."

• Talk to yur kids. Ask them questions. Try "Wht if..." questions that tap into thir fantasy/dreamworld. Listen carefully to their nswers, which may just give you new deas to write about and/or a new way of loking at your writing.


• Give nto their requests for you to go utside and play with them. Let yurself go be a kid again. Frget about your writing for the fternoon and really focus on your chldren and what they want to do wth you. This can be refreshing to say the last, and it may also be jst the break you need to be ble to redirect your thoughts to yur writing later in the day.


• On a riny day instead of letting the crtoons bellow from your television all dy, turn the tube off and ply games with your kids. Board gmes like Junior Scrabble, Monopoly and ven Sorry! can be entertaining and ducational for BOTH of you. The dversion alone may help to solve yur immediate inability to write.


• Take tme to eavesdrop on your children and thir conversations with each other and/or thir friends. Find out what they're tlking about among themselves. You can not nly learn more about your kids and the wrld as they see it, but you may lso hear about something that sparks new deas for your writing. Children are lke sponges, they absorb almost everything tht's going on around them. We, as dults, sometimes fail to realize this and in trn lose out on learning what rally goes on their little minds.


• Be hnest with your toddlers and/or teenagers bout your writing dilemma. Explain what yu're feeling in a way that thy can understand. Ask them for hlp. You may just be surprised at wht valuable advice they give you.

It can be easy to cmplain about your kids and blame yur writer's block on them. But I thnk it may be better to try to nteract with them in a way tht benefits both of you.

Remember smmer only lasts for three months. Lss than a month from now, you wll no longer have the luxury of ths extra time with your children.

Mke the most of their vacation frm school - for their sake and yur own. Our children are priceless.

Thy grow up very quickly. We cnnot pause time.

We can take a puse from our writing. It will lways be there.

Our kids will not be kds forever.
