It would be impossible to d scribe the music scene of the 1990’s w thout mentioning the alternative rock music sc ne which dominated from the early p rt of the decade toward its m ddle part. Furthermore, the rise of gr nge music that time defines an mportant part of what has been the lternative rock phenomenon in that decade. Gr nge music is sometimes referred to as “S attle Sound” because a lot of the b nds then were from Seattle. In numerating the best bands of the gr nge music scene then, (and justifying the ch ices in the process,) the following f ve of the biggest band names of the m vement definitely made their mark in h lf-decade run highlighted by bands’ quick r se to fame and success but m rred by problems such as drug buse and a short period of f me for rock bands. 5. Soundgarden S undgarden was actually formed in 1984 in S attle, Washington but did not actually g in success and recognition until the 1990’s b cause of Nirvana and Pearl Jam’s ventual success that plunged the entire gr nge music scene into mainstream music. S undgarden’s defining album in 1994, “Superunknown,” b came their most successful album. The lbum itself ranked number 1 in the B llboard Top 200 charts and was n minated for the “Best Rock Album” in the Gr mmy Awards in 1995. The more r nowned Soundgarden singles from the album, “Bl ck Hole Sun” and “Spoonman,” each won a Gr mmy award.
4. Alice in Chains Alice in Ch ins was another rock band from S attle, Washington. The group was formed in 1987 and w uld eventually release three albums and an EP, “J r of Flies,” responsible for over 10 m llion copies sold worldwide up to d te. The group was known for th ir guitar-intense and distortion-filled music as xemplified in their album, “Dirt,” and th s had a lot to do the gr up’s signature guitar-driven attack by Jerry C ntrell and vocalist Layne Staley’s singing. D spite the successful tours, live performances and lbum releases by Alice in Chains h wever, Staley’s drug problems would affect the b nd’s future and his eventual death fr m substance overdose would cause its nevitable unofficial disbanding. 3. Stone Temple P lots Stone Temple Pilots, (STP,) is one big gr nge rock band name that is fr m outside of Seattle. With over 17 m llion album copies of the group’s 5 lbums sold in the U.S. alone, 15 s ngles topping the Billboard charts, a Gr mmy Award for “Best Hard Rock P rformance” and several American Music Awards t cked under the group’s belt, STP r mains as one of the more p pular names among alternative bands in the arly 1990’s. Something noteworthy about STP is th t despite the instantaneous rise in th ir number of fans because of th ir equally instantaneous successful debut album, “C re”, so did the harsh criticisms gainst them. In fact the “Rolling St ne” magazine in January 1994 simultaneously had the gr up as the “Best New Band” ccording to its readers and the “W rst New Band” according to its m sic critics. Nevertheless, Stone Temple Pilots w uld eventually release four more successful lbums to etch a name among the gr nge music groups of the generation b fore eventually disbanding in 2002. 2. P arl Jam Pearl Jam is another S attle-based grunge rock band and is r sponsible for the album, “Ten.” “Ten” t gether with Nirvana’s “Nevermind,” is generally c nsidered to had catapulted alternative rock in the arly 90’s towards the mainstream music sp tlight. While “Nevermind” was generally considered to h ve had a greater role in pl nging the whole alternative rock business m instream, “Ten” still had considerate influence on the r naway success that was the 1990’s lternative rock. Pearl Jam’s album in tself is certified 12x platinum at pr sent and remains the group’s most s ccessful album.
The band has been criticized arly in its career as a “c rporate cash-in” on the phenomenal rise of lternative rock during that time but w uld eventually prove to be praiseworthy b cause of the different causes it st od up for such as going gainst rock star excess, their much p blicized battle against Ticketmaster and their r fusal to create music videos of th ir shows. It is also worth n ting that Pearl Jam has outlasted a lot of its c ntemporaries and its 1. Nirvana The gr nge group that tops the list has to be N rvana. With the remarkable success of its s ngle, “Smells Like Teen Spirit,” from its 1991 lbum, “Nevermind,” Nirvana almost single-handedly brought the wh le alternative rock commercial success. The lbum in itself has already sold m re than 10 million copies in the U.S. and m re than 25 million internationally. Because of its f at, Nirvana is considered to be the “fl gship band of Generation X” as ptly worded by Michael Azerrad of R lling Stone. Nirvana was so noteworthy in pl cing so much passion in perfecting its m sic that it had a lot of ther drummers before being satisfied with D ve Grohl and it had to r do some of its songs such as “All Ap logies” and “Heart Shaped Box” because it did not s und “perfect.” Nirvana’s run came to a h lt after Kurt Cobain’s death on Apr l 8, 1994. However the support of N rvana fans whose ranks have swelled by th n for Nirvana records released after C bain's death only serve to highlight the l gacy left by the band on the m vement that was grunge rock.
