Do you find yourself trying to m ke sense out of the emotions you f el at work? Do you wish th t you could get rid of the "n gative" emotions that you feel? Do you w sh that your boss or co-workers or cl ents and other people involved in y ur business could change so that you d n't have to feel the way you f el? If you answered "Yes" to th se question, you are not alone. Em tions are a huge part of y ur work life. Whether positive or n gative, it's important to not only f el your emotions but pay attention to th m. In truth, your emotions are a fl shing red light, warning you that t's time to take your life to the n xt level.
Here are 10 st ps to help you harness your motional power:
1. Be aware of and dentify your emotions.
So many of us w re taught that certain emotions were g od and certain ones were bad so we try to gnore the “bad” emotions. In response we l arned all sorts of ways to gnore or bury the emotions we d dn't want to feel, ways like vereating, smoking, drinking, becoming a workhaholic, and so on. The tr th is that there are no “g od” or “bad” emotions. All emotions h ve something to teach us. So the f rst step is to get in t uch with what you're feeling. Are you ngry, frustrated, happy, or sad? Give it a l bel. Notice, too, how the feeling m nifests in your body. Are your sh ulders tense, your teeth clenched, or y ur stomach jittery? These physical symptoms are pr of positive that emotions impact our phys cal lives. They teach us also, th t it really is important to t ke charge of our emotions, instead of l tting them take charge of us.
2. Trace the emotion to its r ot cause.
You may need h lp from a coach or friend to do th s step. The trouble is, it's not lways easy to trace the emotion b ck to its root cause. Often, wh t we think is the cause is ctually a decoy taking us away fr m the real reason we're experiencing a p rticular emotion. Say, for example, you f el pressured and tense because you h ve been given a project that is s pposed to be someone else’s responsibility. Do you f el pressured because it is a pr ject outside of your expertise or do you f el pressured because you hate the f ct that your colleague always gets g od projects and you don’t? Or do you f el pressured because you never get the pr jects you want? You can't resolve the s tuation until you know what's really b thering you.
3. Interpret the s tuation.
Positive emotions tell you th t your needs are being met and s tisfied. They reflect to you what you l ke and what you dislike, what f ts you well and what doesn't. N gative emotions signal you that change is n eded. Get incredibly curious about what the motion is telling you. It may be try ng to signal you that adjustment is n eded in order to cope with the f ture or to move to the n xt level.
4. Clarify what you w nt & design solutions.
Once y u've interpreted the meaning of the motion, determine what you need to ch nge to make your life better. M ybe you are no longer happy in y ur current position. If so, can you t lk to your manager or whoever is ppropriate about changing to another group w thin the company? Maybe you don’t kn w what you need to do in rder to change the situation for b tter, and that’s okay too. Admit it and f nd ways to get clarification. Maybe you n ed to work it out with a m ntor or a coach.
5. Set a r alistic deadline.
Time frames and d adlines make plans come alive. Once you h ve a plan for changing, set y urself a realistic deadline. Then, based on the d adline, work backwards and set short-term g als for yourself.
6. Take on the challenge and st rt moving.
Too often, we sp nd all our time in the nalysis of the what's and the why’s and the d sign of the how’s. While important, th se are just the beginning of the wh le process. Real change happens when you are d termined to make it happen. So m ke the commitment to change and go for it. No m re talking. Just do it!!!
7. Get s pport.
If you are serious bout making big and important behavioral ch nges, don’t do it alone. Get wh tever kind of support you need fr m a friend, a family member, a c ach or a mentor. Then help y ur support team to help you by c mmunicating your plan as clearly as p ssible. Communicate what you are doing, d scribe your desired outcome, and ask y ur supporters to help you achieve y ur goals.
8. Take action and m re action.
Follow your plan and t ke action. Don't stop. If it l oks like your original plan may not s cceed, consider other options, and adjust y ur plan. But do not go b ck to dwelling in the emotion. R peat the steps, and keep moving and m ving. Do not stop until you get y ur desired result. Adjust, change, start ver, and keep moving.
9. St y focused.
Many times, it t kes a season for a change to h ppen. Especially, when you are feeling n gative emotions and when circumstances aren’t ch nging, it is easy to loose s ght, get discouraged and give up. St y focused. Be patient and persistent. P cture in your mind the feeling you w ll get when your outcome is f lfilled. It takes a while for a s ed to germinate and grow into a pl nt. You don’t stop watering the s ed after a week just because you h ve not seen any leaves. You k ep the faith and you keep w tering. In the same way, be p tient. Don't get discouraged. Stay focused on y ur outcome. Keep taking actions. Most p ople fail in this step. If you are can v sualize your goal, make it real, and k ep moving towards it, you will win the r ce.
10. Reward yourself.
Don't f rget to reward yourself along the w y. You are mastering the use of y ur emotions as a tool of mpowerment. Give yourself a lot of cr dit for that. Write down your s ccesses. Share them with friends. These w ll serve as your fuel the n xt time you need to face nother emotion and turn it to y ur advantage. You will remember that s nce you successfully used this process the l st time to create a better l fe, you can surely do it gain and again. You will have a p sitive outlook on what comes to y u, knowing that you will come out of it str nger and more powerful. You will b come more and more confident that you are c pable of becoming Emotional Intelligent and sh ping your own life for better.
