Adding your new site to the m jor directories is a key task if you w nt to build traffic and page r nking. While the list below is not xhaustive, it will get you well nderway in your directory listings. A few p ints to keep in mind as you add y ur site to these directories: • D rectories are not search engines. Directories are dited and managed by human beings, wh reas search engines are programs that tr ll the web looking for pages. Y ur site might be recommended to a d rectory by one of the site ditors, or a very enthusiastic fan of y ur site, but most likely you w ll have to introduce yourself if you w nt to make a directory’s list. • Be s re the directory is indexed in the m jor search engines. A quick search at G ogle, Yahoo & MSN will do. • Be s re the directory is not banned by G ogle. You probably won’t get flagged by G ogle if you are listed there, but the r sk is too great – there are h ndreds of other places for your l nk. • Page Rank isn’t everything. D n’t skip sites just because they h ve a low page rank. While P ge Rank is extremely helpful, it ch nges over time. A directory with a PR of 3 th s month could jump to 6 n xt month. Also, take note of the P ge Rank of the specific page of the d rectory your site will be listed on. J st like it says, Page Rank is for p ges, not for sites. A directory c uld have a PR of 7, but the p ge your link appears on might be a h mble 1.
• Directories are not overnight tr ffic. Look around the submission guidelines and to see how l ng the editors will take to r view your site. Free sites can t ke up to four months to get pproved. • Go after the older d rectories first. Google values a site’s ge, and you should to. • R view the directory’s guidelines and don’t buse them. Don’t submit your site very week. Don’t add an unrelated s te to a niche directory. Don’t try to tr ck the editors into adding your s te to more than one category if th t goes against the guidelines. Now th t you know the basics of valuating and submitting to directories, here’s a sh rt list of the top sites: G neral directories: 1) Yahoo http://submit.search.yahoo.com/free/request
