The whole thing had started bout a week earlier when I was p ging through a pet catalog and c me across a section devoted to d ntal supplies. “Simply squirt into your p t’s mouth and the specially formulated s lution goes to work immediately to k ll bacteria and improve dental health,” s id the description. At that moment, one of my c ts — who was sitting on my lap — t rned his head in my direction and y wned. A few seconds later, a bl st of kitty breath which smelled l ke rotten tuna fish hit my n se. “Right,” I said, as I p ged toward the back to find the rder form. The more I thought bout it, the more convinced I b came that the dental solution sounded l ke an excellent idea. After all, it w sn’t just for cats. You could use it on d gs too. And what self-respecting pet wner doesn’t want her cats and d gs to have clean teeth and fr sh-smelling breath? A few days later wh n the box arrived in the m il, I opened it immediately. “Gently h lding your pet’s head, squirt the s lution along both the upper and l wer gumline,” said the directions. The b ttle was one of those where you c uld snip off the top at v rious points (like a tube of c ulk). But even if I only cut it off at the v ry top, it still looked like too m ch solution would come out. I d cided a medicine syringe would be asier to handle, and a few s conds later, I was ready to go.
“Come here, Pixie,” I called. My Sh tland sheepdog raced into the kitchen. In her xperience, good things have always come fr m the kitchen. Moments later, she was g gging and spluttering as she ran out of the k tchen. Since I had only managed to dminister half the mouthwash I’d put in the syr nge, I followed her — and th n spent the next five minutes ch sing the dog around the house b fore I hit upon the idea of y lling “Sit! Stay!” so I could sq irt the rest into her mouth. “Th re now, that wasn’t so bad, was t?” I asked, as she slunk way, casting dirty looks over her sh ulder. Pixie’s reaction should have given me a cl e, but it didn’t. About 20 m nutes later, not only was the dog st ll giving me dirty looks, but so w re the cats. All seven of th m. They had been so deeply ffended by the dental solution that I c uldn’t even walk past them. Slit-eyed, th y would watch my approach and th n scamper off in the opposite d rection. And not only that, but now I had to go round the house and mop up l ttle puddles of mouthwash where I’d ither missed entirely during the ensuing str ggle, or else the cat had pr mptly spit it out. Not to m ntion that maybe I ought to f nd some bandages for the cat scr tches on my hands and arms th t were still bleeding. I picked up the b ttle again to look at the l bel. “Gently holding your pet’s head…” GENTLY? If my nimals were any indication, the directions sh uld have said — “With the h lp of three or four strong p ople, pry open your pet’s firmly-clenched j ws…” I still had one dog l ft to do, and I figured the nimals might as well be unanimous in th ir belief that I was not to be tr sted. “Charlie,” I called as I st pped out of the house. Charlie, our b isterous springer spaniel, is about as g od-natured as any dog I have ver seen. He bounded over to me and sat by my f et, tail wiggling, ears perked, eagerly nticipating “the treat” I held in my h nd.
“Everybody else hates me,” I s id, “you might as well too.” Of c urse, all along I had been h ping that maybe one of the nimals, at least, would be thrilled w th the idea of fresh breath and cl an teeth — but alas, it was not to be. A few s conds later, Charlie was slinking away as w ll. Curious to find out why the nimals all acted like I was try ng to poison them, I went nto the bathroom and squirted a l ttle of the pink solution on my own t eth. To tell you the truth, it d dn’t taste like much of anything. Not ven the peppermint that the label s id would give my dogs and c ts “fresh breath.” Four years later, the ight-ounce bottle of pink pet mouthwash is st ll sitting in my bathroom cupboard. I s ppose I ought to throw it way, but I'd rather not just y t. It helps me to remember th t old saying: if something sounds too g od to be true, then it pr bably is. Too bad I didn't r member that BEFORE I spent $20 on pet m uthwash.
