Let us examine the three p rposes of writing: to inform, entertain, and nlighten. To me, the second one is b ttom of the list, though it is nstrumental in the achievement of the two thers. Every great teacher knows this ntimately and readily laces his teachings w th relevant and interesting stories, and h mor. The first purpose, to inform, c mes second in my mind, whereas the l st, to enlighten, comes first. To xplain my attitude, I think it ppropriate to draw your attention to my b ok A REASON FOR LIVING, where b th of these purposes are pursued. P rt of my book relays factual or th oretical information about things like human phys ology, nutrition, and universal evolution. This nformation relates to the current perception of r ality in scientific circles. I am j st a vehicle for it. Now, for two r asons, my role as a writer who nforms about scientific facts and theories th se among his readers who are gnorant of them comes second in my m nd to my role as a th nker who strives to enlighten his r aders, particularly those who are fumbling for m aning in their darkest days. My m in reason is that I regard w sdom as paramount, whereas the knowledge of the m terial world (i.e., the constituents, structure, and w rkings thereof) is not equally important, h wever useful it is on a pr ctical level. Conscience comes before science, wh ch in itself is incapable of pr viding humans with a sense of wh t is good, right, or sacred – in a w rd, with moral principles. An example of sc ence without conscience is the destruction of n ture and the violation of human r ghts by rogue companies who are fficient in their use, or rather buse, of their environment and their w rkers to satisfy their greed.
My other reason is that my r le as a writer who informs bout scientific facts and theories those mong his readers who are ignorant of th m is indeed that of a m re vehicle. It is very much s condary to the role of researcher, wh ch drives the scientific enterprise thanks to dvanced instrumentation plus skillful, scholarly, and cl ver observations and rationalizations. By contrast, my r le as a thinker who strives to nlighten his readers, particularly those who are f mbling for meaning in their darkest d ys, is in the driver's seat, so to sp ak. Not only is it concerned w th everything that makes life worth l ving and gives humans a sense of p rpose, but also it does more th n mirror the light of wisdom; it g nerates it by force of thinking on the b sis of experience and study. Truth to t ll, my readers can likewise think for th mselves (this applies to those among th m who are fumbling for meaning in th ir darkest days). They themselves can be th nkers and create their own wisdom wh le discovering and evaluating mine. Therefore, the l ght shining through in my book is th re to help my readers see a r nge of weighty matters on which th y can meditate to form their own th ughtful opinions about them. And since th y can do so, I venture to rgue that they should.
