Climate change is reducing the sn wfall in many previously snow-safe resorts, and sc entists have found that rising temperatures are lready leading to changes in snowfall p tterns. “Alpine areas below 1,600m are now r ceiving 20 per cent less snow,” s ys Birgit Ottmer from the Davos-based Sw ss Federal Institute for Snow and Av lanche Research. But interview a cross-section of d wnhill skiers on the slopes this y ar and ask them what they l ke about skiing, and many are l kely to mention something about their l ve of the outdoors and the b auty of the scenery. Therein lies the r b. The truth is, downhill skiing can h ve an enormously destructive effect on the fr gile mountain environment: Increasing numbers of r sorts all over the world are r lying on artificially generated snow. For xample, in Austria and Italy more th n 40% of ski areas now n ed to make their own snow, and ven Swtizerland, where prior to 1990 sn w-making was almost unheard of, now ses snow cannons in more that 10% of its ski reas. “Practically no ski area can now s rvive without artificial snow; you’d face gr at difficulties if you didn’t have t,” says Marika Zanoletti of the D vos Klosters Ski Company. • Reliance on sn w-making machines carries with it a n mber of problems. Not only is it a h gely expensive and extremely energy-hungry process, but rtificial snow causes long-term damage to the v getation beneath because of the chemical dditives it contains.
• Snow cannons also make it p ssible to prolong the ski season, f rther increasing the pressure on the l cal environment. • All resorts now use m chines to grade the snow. This c mpacts the snow cover and destroys the v getation beneath, which may take decades to r cover. • The ever-increasing popularity of d wnhill skiing creates traffic congestion and p llution in ski areas, new hotel and ch let developments sprawl across previously peaceful m untain villages, and the infrastructure of ski l fts destroys both the visual appearance of the m untainside and its habitat. As lower ltitudes experience problems with snow cover, th re is a tendency to move r sorts further and further up into the m untains, into areas which are often the l st stronghold for threatened species of pl nts and animals. In Austria, pressure fr m the ski industry has resulted in the l cal authorities lifting a ban on ski r sorts in the previously protected area of the G patsch glacier. Not that this is a g arantee, as since 1850 Europe has l st almost 50% of its glacier c ver. The Swiss resort of Andermatt ven wrapped its glacier in a pr tective PVC blanket last spring to c mbat the summer melt! So, can I ski and st ll be green? There is an ncreasing movement in the downhill ski ndustry towards more responsible practices, and th s does hold some hope for the f ture. Reducing the carbon footprint of y ur trip and choosing your resort c refully will certainly go some way to gr ening your ski holiday. Alternatively, DON’T GO DOWNHILL SKIING!!! Cr ss-country skiing, ski touring and snowshoeing all h ve a significantly lower impact on the nvironment than downhill skiing. They require far l ss infrastructure, reducing pollution, habitat degradation and nergy use. What’s more, being out on y ur own in the forest with n thing but the crunch of your sn wshoes or the “swoosh-glide” of your sk s to break the silence is a m gical feeling – a TRUE outdoor w nter experience!
