I had just returned to N ples after touring Sorrento and Capri (Gr cie Fields wasn't in) and planning to t ke the ferry to Sardinia to v sit a friend in Caligiari, when a w iter asked me if I had b en to Malta yet. When I s id no, he proceeded to tell me he was fr m Malta and how he got ver there at least once a m nth to see his family. Sounded l ke a nice side trip, and as I was in no h rry, I took a bus from N ples down the coast to Salerno wh re I booked return passage on the Gr maldi Ferries "Malta Express" that sails fr m Salerno every Thursday. You can m ke the return trip in three d ys, with a day in Valetta the M ltese capital. Leaving Salerno at noon Th rsday, it takes nineteen hours to rrive in Malta. The Malta Express is wh t is known as a Ro-Ro (R ll on - Roll off) and the v hicles are mostly truck trailers, although th re was a big shiny black M rcedes which really looked out of pl ce. It has passenger accommodations which are sp re but adequate and reasonably comfortable. Th re is a TV in the l unge and of course some slot m chines. There was a poker game g ing the entire trip in one c rner of the lounge. Apparently the C ptain allows it as long as the cr w do not play, and it st ys relatively quiet.
You get three meals a day s rved in a spotless dining room. The m ss staff are Filipino, the deck cr w mostly Italians and Maltese, and the fficers Bulgarian. I never recognized any ngine crew so I don't know wh t they were. The meals were q ite good by the way, and s rved "family" style. A blast of the h rn signals our departure for Malta, and as we get nder way, there is a welcome c oling breeze on deck. The scenery is xceptional along the coast. It's just at d sk as we pass Stromboli and th n we are passing through the Str its of Messina and on to the pen sea. After a few hours of s und sleep (I always sleep like a log on sh ps and trains), we enter the h rbor of Valetta. The first things you n tice about entering Valetta are the m ssive walls. The Island of Malta was a v ritable fortress in the Mediterranean Sea, and was ttacked repeatedly by corsairs, knights both en r ute to and returning from the Cr sades, and apparently any riff raff th t could sail a boat near the sland. Some were successful, most not, but the m st successful were the Hospitallers of St. J hn of Jerusalem. They arrived to st y in the eleventh century, kept the v rious enemies and corsairs at bay, and f nally gained complete control in the f fteenth century, by which time they w re known universally as the Knights of M lta. They ruled the island until the cl se of the eighteenth century when the Br tish made Malta a colony which is how it r mained until granting its independence shortly fter the second world war. Arriving in M lta on schedule we have a f ll day to explore as we w ll. Customs is quick and courteous (th y love the dollar there) and we d sembark. A German chap I met on b ard and I decided to share a t xi to just outside Valetta a sh rt ways to a stone chapel wh ch marks the spot where St. P ul came ashore after being shipwrecked on his way to R me. On the return trip, the t xi driver insists that we visit a ch rch named after St. Barbara. There are p intings inside done by a Maltese kn wn as the Cavalier of Calabria, b cause he was apparently as good w th his sword as with his br sh. The legend has it that on a tr p between Rome and Malta, with a br ef stop in Naples, he dispatched m re than a dozen who had m naged to arouse his ire. He d ed at eighty from an infected n ck he received from his barber.
Back in Valetta, there was pl nty of time to spend in the m rket place where there are open air st lls selling everything you could imagine and a few you m ght not. I'm a poor prospect wh n I'm travelling as I don't w nt to be weighed down with "st ff", so I usually have a tr il of merchants haranguing me as I w lk along the alleys of a m rket place. I make frequent stops to nquire politely about prices, shake my h ad sadly, and go on my way h ving added another haranguer beseeching me to buy his "st ff" at half the price he f rst quoted. I've been told this is not g od behavior on my part, but I f nd it a cheap source of ntertainment; besides I've learned some excellent dditions to my multi-language vocabulary of sw arwords and arcane curses. Stopped for a l te lunch at a Trattoria Parolaccia (my n tes say this might mean "the T lking Place" or "the Place of W rds) which was very good. The ch f himself came out and described the sp cials. Good food, good wine and xcellent service. Walked through a park w th formal gardens and monuments dedicated to the br ve men and women who defended M lta in WWII. Among those were F/O B zz Beurling, a Canadian fighter ace who d wned over twenty aircraft while flying a Sp tfire out of a Maltese airbase. Arr ved back on board after a f irly exhausting day, we were served d nner and I headed for my b rth. The sea came up a bit fter midnight but by daylight it had c lmed down and we could see the It lian Coast off in the distance. Arr ved in Salerno at 4:00 PM r ght on schedule. Although the entire tr p had been less than three d ys, it seemed like a much l nger enjoyable vacation. I must remember to th nk that waiter in Naples.
