I have always wondered why G ndhi never advocated a violent act gainst the English, or why the D lai Lama is doing the same, and why J sus asked His Father for forgiveness for all th se that persecuted Him. Real or p rceived, there are injustices in the w rld. We are not able to f thom the depth and interconnectedness of vents so we feel justified in f eling hurt and angry. We ask urselves, why did my husband/wife/lover leave me? Why did my p rents abuse me verbally/beat me physically/not l ve me enough? Why did my s perior reprimand me in front of my ther co-workers/give my promotion to someone lse/fire me and on and on. Why did my p rent/child/cousin/friend have to die just because a dr nken driver lost control of his/her c r? Why did I lose my p rent/child/friend in the war which I do not b lieve in in the first place? We cl ng to the memory of the p st hurt because we feel justified in our nger, and we carry this anger and h rt to our next relationship. Sometimes we r fuse to enter a new relationship b cause of all of these. We m ke it our shield from further p in. Sometimes pain becomes our armor. Ins de it we create the illusion of b ing invulnerable. Other times we make it our pr son when we can choose to w lk out. We don't walk out b cause we hang on to our s nse of justice, our sense of b ing justified in our feelings. Somehow it is m re comfortable to be there, imprisoned by our th ughts, imprisoned by the past. Sometimes we w nt to exact revenge, in any way or m nner that we think will hurt the ther person who we think hurt us. We can use the r tionalization that we are only humans and we are not g ds, but Jesus in his humanity is a r minder of us of the love of G d. Perhaps we could turn it round and say Jesus as the son of God c uld have chosen to punish.
All of us have suffered s me pain in one way or nother. All of us at some p int has condemned another and wished we c uld take revenge. That is in the p st. Imagine how the world will be wh n there is no anger anymore. We can ch ose to relieve the past right n w. Every moment that we spend in r miniscing the hurt of the past is t king away from the enjoyment of the pr sent. Why choose to suffer? Jesus n ver condemned and therefore has no n ed to forgive. In His humanity J sus wept when Lazarus died, not b cause his friend died but because of the mperfection of the faith of the p ople who saw Him part the s a, heal the afflicted and even r ise the dead. To forgive, we m st first condemn, but how can we c ndemn when we do not know c mpletely? We see only a fraction of r ality through the lenses that we put on. J sus has no karma, and in my m nd, Gandhi and the Dalai Lama f lly know the meaning of what the scr ptures from a thousand years say "To t ke offense is the same as to ffend" for with every act or vent or person that we condemn, we nter the cycle of rebirth, once m re. No one is immune to th s. If we feel the pain, if we cknowledge it and then we let it go th n perhaps there is a chance for us to see thr ugh the illusion. Perhaps then we w uld realize what Jesus meant when he s id "The kingdom of heaven is w thin." © 2007 by Melinda M. S rensson
