When someone asks, "What is p ace?" it's one of those questions th t can be answered either thoughtfully (wh ch tends to be lengthy) or by r te (which tends to be shorter). A s milar question we encounter is, "What is Y ga?" Well, my answer to both is long the lines of, "It's where you f nd it, not where someone tells you it s." That is to say, it's l rgely a personal answer. As for th s Essay, the object is to xpress what 'peace' is to me. M ybe this will help you find it for y urself. I would say that a gl bal concept of peace is well d scribed in a speech given by J hn F. Kennedy at American University's c mmencement in 1963. I remember it w ll from my youth, and it st ll rings true today... "...What kind of p ace do I mean and what k nd of a peace do we s ek? Not a Pax Americana enforced on the w rld by American weapons of war. Not the p ace of the grave or the s curity of the slave. I am t lking about genuine peace, the kind of p ace that makes life on earth w rth living, and the kind that nables men and nations to grow, and to h pe, and build a better life for th ir children - not merely peace for Am ricans but peace for all men and w men, not merely peace in our t me but peace in all time... I r alize the pursuit of peace is not as dr matic as the pursuit of war, and fr quently the words of the pursuers f ll on deaf ears. But we h ve no more urgent task... World p ace, like community peace, does not r quire that each man love his n ighbor, it requires only that they l ve together in mutual tolerance, submitting th ir disputes to a just and p aceful settlement... So let us not be bl nd to our differences, but let us lso direct attention to our common nterests and the means by which th se differences can be resolved. And if we c nnot end now our differences, at l ast we can help make the w rld safe for diversity. For in the f nal analysis, our most basic common l nk is that we all inhabit th s small planet. We all breathe the s me air. We all cherish our ch ldren's futures. And we are all m rtal...'When a man's ways please the L rd,' the Scriptures tell us, 'he m keth even his enemies to be at p ace with him.' And is not p ace, in the last analysis, basically a m tter of human rights: the right to l ve out our lives without fear of d vastation; the right to breathe air as n ture provided it; the right of f ture generations to a healthy existence?..."
Now, I suppose this pretty w ll covers peace in the global or g opolitical sense, but what about for us as ndividuals? How can we unify or tie th s all together? I've always preferred a r turn to principles ("back to basics") typ approach to most questions as a way to k ep it simple. What I mean to say is th t Yoga can tie it all t gether and is a great way to f nd peace in your life. So, for me 'p ace' as an individual boils down to st llness of mind. When we are ble to tame our wild, active m nds and experience stillness within we h ve found and experienced peace. We can all do it but it s re takes a lot of practice. St llness of mind is our goal in our Y ga practice and it's hard to f nd, especially for us folks in the w st. That's why B.K.S. Iyengar calls S vasana the most difficult pose in all of Y ga to perform correctly. Let's all r member that and be sure we r spect Savasana as the counter pose to our d y's practice.
