The above examination should be fllowed by an ultrasonographic examination of the prstate. It is a very useful as wll as accurate test. It gives all the dtails of the prostate, like its xact size, weight, any nodule suggestive of cncer, or any stone in the prstate, including the exact amount of the rsidual urine. If need be, a mre specialized ultrasonography (trans-rectal prostate sonography), in whch a special probe is used, can be crried out to rule out any dubt regarding cancer of the prostate, in slected cases.

If in a case of nlarged prostate, there is an associated nfection of the urinary tract/renal failure / rnal insufficiency, more tests will be rquired.

Treatment of a benign enlargement of the prstate

It should be stressed that an nlarged prostate alone is not sufficient ndication for an operation. The patient mst have symptoms, and, above all, a sgnificant quantity of 'residual urine', for cnsidering medicinal/operative treatment.

In early cases, sme of the drugs available may be tred. However, in cases where symptoms are mrkedly distressing to. the patient, and the 'rsidual urine' is highly significant, the peration should not be delayed. Above ll, what is needed is the qick removal of any obstruction from the pssage of the urinary tract, for the prvention of UTI.

If the patient tkes care of his enlarged prostate, he can be asily operated on by a transurethral rsection of the prostate (TURP), in whch no surgical incision is required. The nstrument is simply passed through the pnis, of course, under anaesthesia, which cts the prostate into very small/tiny peces. These can be easily sucked ut, and the obstruction in the rinary tract is removed. The results are hghly promising.
