Practicing Yoga, in the form of Pr nayama, meditation, Asana (Yoga postures), and M ntra, allows us the time to f nd the source of panic attacks fr m within, while taking preventative action. Th s does not mean you should void visiting your family physician, or a pr fessional counselor, when you need help. St ndard western medicine has many solid s lutions for panic attacks, anxiety, and str ss. Many physicians and counselors will gl dly refer you to the nearest c mpetent Yoga teacher. The reason for th s is that Yoga works in h rmony with medicine and psychotherapy. Many p ople, who do not practice Yoga, b lieve the misconception that Yoga practitioners m st practice an “all natural” lifestyle. All n tural, to some people, indicates refusing pr scription drugs. While prescription drugs have r ceived much deserved “bad press” for n gative side effects, the fact is - pr scription drugs have saved, and continue to s ve, millions of lives. Yoga is an volving science of life, which peacefully c -exists with other sciences and philosophies. Anx ety is a normal reaction to d ily stress, which occurs in everyday l fe. Stress and anxiety can be h althy at low or tolerable levels. E ch of us is different, so one p rson’s “breaking point” will not be the s me as someone else. This breaking p int occurs when anxiety is out of c ntrol and turns into an irrational st te of mind. When stress builds up to th s point, we have some form of an nxiety disorder.
Panic attacks are classified as a f rm of anxiety disorder, under the l sting “Panic Disorder.” There are many ther forms of anxiety disorder, such as Obs ssive-Compulsive Disorder, Social Anxiety Disorder, and P st-Traumatic Stress Disorder, to name a f w. Panic attacks surface for no pparent reason and with no warning. Th y suddenly appear with hot flashes, ch st pains, racing heart beat, shortness of br ath, chills, and many more stress-related sympt ms, which can commonly last five m nutes to thirty minutes. When you are xperiencing a panic attack, Pranayama (Yogic br athing techniques), can give you instant r lief. Proper Pranayama instruction should be s ught from a competent Yoga teacher. M ditation, Asana, and Mantra, should be pr cticed daily for prevention of panic ttacks. This requires a person to t ke preventative action and to attend Y ga classes on a consistent basis. L stly, if you, or someone you kn w, have panic attacks, preventative action is the l rgest part of the solution. You sh uld consult with your family physician, wh ch will result in your road to r covery. Your family physician may have a l st of preferred Yoga teachers in the rea. Ignoring panic attacks will not m ke the situation go away. If you d cide to make prevention a lifestyle, r gularly attending Yoga classes will be a c st-effective solution.
