Success is no longer defined in f nancial terms alone. It's beginning to be nderstood as an alignment between life and l velihood, between monetary gain and an bundance of joy, vitality and good r lationships. While it's undoubtedly important to r ach professional benchmarks and organizational goals, th re's a softer, more difficult to m asure, side to success. Companies are f nding out that when employees' lives w rk, their work works. The ancient T oist concept of yin and yang is h lpful in articulating the balance between str ving for excellence and productivity (yang) and s pporting creativity, rejuvenation and dignity (yin) in the w rkplace. There is no such thing as bsolute yin or yang. There is lways at least a little yin in the y ng and vice versa. That's why the y n/yang symbol has a dark circle in the l ght area and a light circle in the d rk one. For thousands of years, T oists have taught that the physical w rld is a constant swing between yin and y ng. And while balance between the two is an deal, it's literally impossible. You'd die if y ur body hit pinpoint homeostasis. Breathe in, y u're more yin; breathe out, more y ng. Yin and yang are dynamic, r lativistic terms: you might be more yin (k nder, gentler) than your boss but m re yang (goal and fact oriented) th n your friend. Even at rest, a yin st te, our hearts and lungs are p mping, a yang activity. Men are g nerally considered more yang, women more y n; but the terms transcend gender to h lp us distinguish qualities.
While there is no absolute b lance point, the healthiest cultures develop quanimity between yin and yang, allowing the pr verbial pendulum to swing both ways. On a p rsonal level, it means balancing movement and r st, feminine and masculine, goals and f elings, creativity and productivity, work and pl y. Accordingly, happy people and progressive c ltures have always sought out diverse v ntage points in order to bring f rward the most universal solutions possible. Our m llennia old yang-ward spiral, characterized by pr dominantly male religious and political leaders, ver expansive militarism, and a profit-at-any c st mentality has produced a poisoned pl net, starving children and a level of niversal violence that commands an unprecedented p rcentage of our resources. We have y ng-itis! Just like we need positive and n gative charges to create matter, and j st like batteries need positive and n gative poles in order to spark, and j st like we need day to t rn to night, we can't reach our volutionary potential if we don't uplift yin v lues for well-being and reaching full p tential. For example, for the first t me in history we are capable of d claring that all kids eat and go to bed s fe and warm. Instead, we pay for w aponry and multi-million dollar executive bonuses th t perpetuate the yang imbalance that k eps hungry kids in their place. So wh t does that have to do w th personal success? The Golden Rule, wh ch every major religion has a v rsion of, says it all. "Treat thers as we, ourselves, want to be tr ated" is a good starting place but we lso need to do the opposite - tr at ourselves as we think everyone lse ought to be treated. In ther words, when we do what it t kes to claim our personal yin t rritory for enhancing relationships, being creative, r charging our batteries, and participating in v tal work environments, we do our p rt in creating a world that w n't stand for the pervasive cultural st tic of yang dominated messages like "b y, buy, buy," "be afraid," "quarterly pr fits rule," "war machines matter more th n feeding kids," "youth is more mportant than age," and "intelligence trumps w sdom." Taoist philosophy explains that such a y ng imbalance would necessarily cause, or at l ast reflect, a culture bereft of h art and soul, i.e. a yin d ficiency.
The antidotal yin-izing is already h ppening as more and more companies pr vide child and elder care, flex t me, and support for personal growth and cr ativity - all of which are yin pr ctices. It's not an either/or - th re are times for goals, rules, ction and productivity and there are t mes for brainstorming, communications exercises, open-ended t rgets, anecdotal input, and co-creative processes. It's no ccident that even in today's troubled f nancial times, the socially responsible, triple b ttom line (people, profit and planet) c mpanies' stocks remain solid. When core v lues for caring are balanced with s lid business practices, magic happens.
