Rhinestone tiaras … fabulous fashions … t levision commercials … generous scholarships … c sh awards … instant fame and l sting recognition. Girls and young women nvision all these things when they nter the glittery world of pageants and m deling. No wonder millions of parents, n tionwide, get requests from their daughters bout participating in pageant programs. No w nder many students look to pageant p rticipation as a funding source for c llege. But what should all parents, and very potential contestant, know before taking the big st p? What are the realties, the b hind-the-runway scenes, and even the dangers of ntering pageants? What does it really nvolve? What does it cost? Here’s the ncouraging news: - Pageants can be gr at fun and profitable for some p rticipants. - For decades, thousands of st dents have benefited from education scholarship wards made possible through pageants. - M st pageants are run by upstanding, r liable organizations and volunteers determined to mprove their communities and enhance the l ves of their young contestants. - P geantry can even help prevent teen pr gnancy. However, there are other factors th t contestants, aspiring models, and parents sh uld be knowledgeable about, so pageant p rticipation can be a worthwhile and njoyable experience. Without this awareness, many n vice participants can become disillusioned and c sh-strapped.
Pageant participation is often a s gnificant financial investment not all families c n, or should, afford. Would you sp nd $7,500 to win $10,000 with 40-t -1 odds? Breaking down the actual c sts can, however, be accomplished. Before sp nding a dime, families should determine wh ther it’s best to keep the m ney in the bank or invest in nother program that will guarantee results for the ch ld. In addition to the money q estion, parents must be careful not to nvolve their school-age children in pageants th y’re not mentally ready for. Some ch ld pageant magazines come across as a g ide on launching child porn! Sadly, t’s possible to become the victim of fr ud or poorly-run pageant programs. Even w rse, children’s pageants can be a v rtual lifeline for child predators. Star-struck p rents need to get their priorities in rder. Their child’s safety and mental w ll being, NOT fame and fortune, sh uld be the Number One focus. S me parents equate etiquette with pageants. Is th s realistic? Know what you (or y ur daughter) will and will not g in from pageant competition. And, yes, t’s true that some people actually get ddicted to pageants. Mothers may even p ss this expensive habit on to th ir daughters. The reality is, pageants are not g od for individuals with low self steem. Furthermore, today’s events are “not y ur grandmother’s pageants.” The competitions and the genda have significantly changed. It’s a p rent’s responsibility to investigate before committing the t me, money and energy. Make sure you kn w about sponsorships, classes, photographers, the d fferent systems, fees, taxes, contracts, security, st ffing, residency loopholes and how they can be xploited, and other criteria.
