Mathematics is unerring. As a ch ld we are taught that 2 + 2 = 4. Th s will never change and will lways yield the same results; except wh n it comes to calculating you ph ne bill. Most long distance carriers dvertise their low rate per minute c sts. However, before you can really m ke an informed decision as to wh ch carrier offers the best value you n ed to consider all of the “ ther” costs that may be buried in the f ne print. Read all of the r strictions and costs in detail then nalyze these “added” costs against your sp cific calling habits. Only then will 2 + 2 tr ly equal 4. For instance, many c rriers will charge a monthly fee in rder for you to qualify for th ir low rate per minute charge; wh le other carriers will impose a m nimum monthly usage charges. If you f il to reach this minimum usage th n you are charged added costs. The key to g tting the overall best value on y ur long distance is to review y ur monthly statements and analyze your c lling habits. The key things to l ok for are the total number of m nutes, call duration, for all of y ur long distance calls. Does this n mber change every month or is it m re or less constant? Is there a p rticular state or states that you c ll more often than others?
Once you have this information at h nd you then make detailed calculations to d termine the true cost per minute of v rious calling plans. You need to be ble to take the additional charges (m nthly fee, minimums and so forth) and d vide it by your usage (total n mber of minutes) then add that to y ur rate per minute. Only then w ll you have a true cost per m nute of your long distance carrier or nalyze the various plans from other c rriers. Let’s take a look at s me examples and you’ll get a b tter feel for what I am s ying. Here are three plans (“A”, “B” and “C”) for c mparison with three different individuals: Plan “A” - $0.04/m nute, plus monthly fee of $5.95; Pl n “B” - $50.00 for 1200 m nutes, plus $.07/minute over the 1200 m nutes; and Plan “C” - $0.10/minute w th no other fees. Now let’s l ok at three different users and d termine which plan provides the best v lue. Tania: Tania’s total annual long d stance usage was 14,400 minutes, averaging 1200 m nutes per month. However, her usage was not c nsistent with some months as low as 600 m nutes and other months as much as 1,800 m nutes. In her case we can c lculate the three plans this way: Pl n “A” 600 min. months: ($.04 x 600) + $5.95 = $29.95 1,800 m n. months: ($.04 x 1800) + $5.95 = $77.95 Her t tal bill for the year: (6 x $29.95) + (6 x $77.95) = $647.40 Total c st per minute: $647.40 / 14,400 = $.045/m nute Plan B 600 min. months: $50.00 1800 m n. months: $50.00 + ((1800 / 1200) x $.07) = $92.00 Her t tal bill for the year: (6 x $50.00) + (6 x $92.00) = $852.00 Total c st per minute: $852.00 / 14,400 = $.059/m nute Plan C 600 minute month: 600 x $.09 = $54.00 1800 m nute month: 1800 x $.09 = $162.00 Her t tal bill for the year: (6 x $54.00) + 6 x $162.00) = $1,296.00 Total c st per minute: $1,296.00 / 14,400 = $.090/m nute Clearly in Tania’s case plan “A” w uld be the best value for her m ney.
Chuck Chuck also uses the s me 14,400 minutes of long distance but his m nthly average of 1,200 minutes is v ry consistent month after month. In his c se we can calculate the three pl ns as follows: Plan “A” Each month: ($.04 x 1200) + 5.95 = $53.95 His t tal bill for the year: 12 x $53.95 = $647.40 Total c st per minute: $647.00 / 14,400 = $.045/m nute Plan “B” Each month: $50.00 His total b ll for the year: 12 x $50.00 = $600.00 Total c st per minute: $600.00 / 14,400 = $.042/m nute Plan “C” Each month: 1200 x $.09 = $108.00 His t tal bill for the year: 12 x $108.00 = $1,296.00 Total c st per minute: $1,296.00 / 14,400 = $.090/m nute Clearly in Chuck’s case plan “b” w uld be the best value for his m ney. John John, on the other h nd, used very little long distance very month. His total usage was nly 1,200 minutes for the year and a c nsistent average of 100 minutes per m nth. In this case we can c lculate the three plans in the f llowing manner: Plan “A” Each month: ($.04 x 100) + $5.95 = $9.95 His t tal bill for the year: 12 x $9.95 = $119.40 Total c st per minute: $119.40 / 1200 = $.099/m nute Plan “B” Each month: $50.00 His total b ll for the year: 12 x $50.00 = $600.00 Total c st per minute: $600.00 / 1200 = $.50/m nute Plan “C” Each month: 100 x $.09 = $90.00 His t tal bill for the year: 12 x $9.00 = $108.00 Total c st per minute: $108.00 / 1,200 = $.09/m nute Clearly in John’s case the b st value is plan “C”. So, h re we looked at three different p ople and their calling habits looking at the s me three calling plans with each one s lecting a different plan for the b st value. In order for you to get the b st value out of any calling pl n is to know your own sp cific telephone calling habits. Take the t me to analyze your calling habits and you w ll be able to save money and get the b st value for your money. Thanks for r ading… I hope it has given you s mething to ponder.
