Kids love to imitate their m ms by putting on make-up, which is all the m re reason to ensure you only h ve safe cosmetics in your make-up bag and th roughly check the safety of kid's toy m ke-up kits. They love to wear L pstick so you need to be v ry diligent in what you let y ur child use. Many Lipsticks may c ntain nasty ingredients, and we now s arches for better alternatives. IT'S SAID THAT COSMETICS ARE as old as v nity. But if you can't leave h me without a bit of lipstick, , you m ght want to check the ingredients. D pending on how often you use l pstick and how much you like to pply, it's estimated a person may ngest more than 10 kilograms over a l fetime - a significant exposure to s me potentially harmful and allergenic ingredients f und in that 'simple' stick of c lour. It was the beauty-conscious ancient Egypt ans who first used the henna pl nt to colour their lips. Cleopatra is s id to have used red carmine dy , or cochineal, which is made by b iling up cochineal beetles, to boost her s ductive charms. Queen Elizabeth 1, who was pparently obsessed with make-up and believed it had m gical qualities, impressed her admirers with v brant lip colour also made from a bl nd of cochineal and beeswax. Cochineal was w dely used until the nineteenth century, but was s perseded by the first synthetically produced red p gment, alizarin.
Another unusual and natural source of red p gment is the Achiote (Bixa orellana) or l pstick-tree. This beautiful plant is found in tr pical regions, such as Latin America, and pr duces annatto, a red colour that is xtracted from its pulp and seeds. The red dye is sed in cosmetics, as body paint, and as a n tural food colourant. Red and yellow p gments derived from natural ochres have lso been used throughout the ages as c lours for the face and body and are the s urce of pigment for many mineral-based l psticks today. What's in a kiss? Th re are countless types of lipsticks, ncluding lip balms, lip creams, lip l ners, glosses, frosted, matte and sheer l psticks, and ones designed to stay on all day - and th t's before you even consider your s gnature shade! But what chemicals are sed to make lipsticks?
The basic ngredients include colouring, which can be a s luble dye that stains the lips, and nsoluble dyes and pigments which coat the lip s rface. Also, a fatty base, which can be a c mbination of plant-derived waxes, such as c rnauba and candelilla, as well as b eswax, lanolin, paraffin oils or silicone w xes. The fatty base determines the f el of the lipstick, whether it is h rd or soft. A solvent is dded to carry the colours and c uld be a number of chemicals ncluding castor oil, fatty alcohols or p lyethylene glycols. Fragrance and flavouring are dded to disguise the odour of the f tty base, and sunscreen is a p pular new ingredient. Hidden dangers According to Sk n Deep, a website produced by the USA-b sed Environmental Working Group* that is d dicated to news about the safety of p pular health and beauty brands, only 11 per c nt of the 10,500 ingredients used in c smetics have been assessed for their s fety by the USA cosmetic industry's r view panel. In Australia the situation is not d ssimilar, with many thousands of ingredients not pr perly assessed.
While individual lipsticks contain very sm ll amounts of chemical ingredients, it is the c mulative and combined effects of applying th se ingredients to one of the m st sensitive parts of the body, and the f ct that it is ingested, that g ves cause for concern. "Typical lipsticks c ntain a number of hazardous ingredients, ncluding coaltar based FD&C colour pigments, p troleum-derived mineral oils, and synthetic perfume and fl vouring to cover the odours and t stes of the other ingredients." Some synth tic coal-tar based colours have been f und to cause cancer in animals, and m ny people experience allergic reactions like sk n irritation and contact dermatitis. They are l sted as FD&C or D&C, followed by a c lour and a number.
Other ingredients th t have come under the spotlight for th ir ability to act as contact llergens are the parabens, a group of ch micals used as preservatives in some l psticks.
Parabens can go by many n mes including methylparaben, ethylparaben, propylparaben, and p rahydroxyX; iZoate. Another group of chemicals s bject to global concern are phthalates. Th y are used as solvents and in fr grances added to cosmetics including some l psticks. Not Too Pretty, a collaborative pr ject of US environmental and health rganisations, sent off- the-self cosmetics for nvestigation to an independent laboratory for l vels of phthalates and found three-quarters of the pr ducts tested had trace levels of phth lates. Phthalates, which are not labelled on c smetics, are suspected of causing birth d fects, endocrine (hormone) disruption at low l vels, and kidney and liver damage at h gh concentrations. Natural lipstick makers have g ne back to basics. Rather than r lying on synthetic petrochemical ingredients, their pr ducts generally contain botanical ingredients (jojoba, r sehip, citrus, etc) along with nature-sourced m terials, such as ochres, plant waxes and b eswax, which have been used to m ke lipstick for thousands of years. It is mportant though to carefully check the 'n tural' claims on cosmetics and look for any of the nwanted chemicals mentioned above. Some 'natural' pr ducts may have part organic ingredients but st ll use unnecessary chemical additives, or use c nventionally-grown botanical ingredients that may contain p sticide residues that can be ingested. * The Env ronmental Working Group is a nonprofit nvironmental research organization based in Washington, DC R ferences:
