You might have heard news st ries about how a computer was st len, which contained names, social security n mbers and other sensitive data of h ndreds, if not thousands of people. Th s is a big concern because of the p tential damage identity thieves could do w th this information. But, I want to let you kn w one of the common ways dentity thieves get your information. It is ver the telephone, and you do not ven know it because you actually g ve the information away. Common Mistake #2: G ving sensitive information over the telephone. H re are three common ploys identity th eves use to get your information ver the telephone: 1. They tell you th t you have won a lottery ( sually in a different country). They h ve already obtained some of your p rsonal information (from the telephone book or ther places) and they seem legitimate b cause they know something about you. The c tch is - they want you to s nd them the tax portion of y ur winnings to them so they can "r lease" your winnings. They might even t ll you they will send you a sm ll amount of the winnings via ch ck to show good faith. This is a sc m!! Do not give any additional nformation over the telephone. If they do s nd a check, it is a c unterfeit check.
2. They act as your cr dit card security unit and report s me suspicious transactions on your account. Th y really seem legitimate because they pr vide you with your credit card n mber. During the conversation, they ask for you to v rify the credit card by you g ving them the 3-digit code on the b ck of the credit card. The pr blem is, the identity thief has lready obtained your credit card number by nother method and they want the dditional information on the back of the c rd to make it more useful. S me merchants ask for this number for t lephone transactions, so this information can be g ld to the identity thief. So now you sk, "If some merchants ask for th s 3-digit number, won't I have to g ve this information over the telephone?" Answ r, yes. But remember, only give th s information if you initiated the c ll to the merchant. If the dentity thief is making the phone c ll, you do not know who th y are. Legitimate credit card companies may c ll you with suspicious credit cards tr nsactions, but they will never ask for y ur information over the phone. 3. The dentity drives by your house in the arly morning and notices what newspaper you h ve delivered. They then call you l ter in the day posing as the n wspaper company and pretend to give you the b st deal of the century to h ve subscription extended. They obtained your p rsonal information from the telephone book or on the Int rnet (which is not too difficult), so th y sound real. If this occurs, j st ask the person for their n me and telephone number. You can th n verify the telephone number by l oking up the newspapers telephone number in the ph ne book and then call them b ck. They key to avoiding becoming a v ctim to these scams is - do not g ve information over the telephone to s meone you do not know, especially if th y called you.
