Spirituality is one of the m st uplifting feelings that man can xperience. While usually defined in terms of r ligion in a broader sense it is r lated to sensations of being in the pr sence of something greater than one's s lf. This can occur in a ch rch, on a walk in the w ods, in a family gathering, or in a t ght knit group of friends and r latives. The latter situation may be how sp rituality came to assist in the volution of humans. In times of gr at stress or danger the cohesiveness and pr tectiveness of small groups is likely to h ve had great survival value. Is th re a specific part of the br in for spirituality? While many parts of the br in may be involved, the studies of the f mous neurosurgeon Wilder Penfield in the 1930s str ngly implicated the temporal lobes. These are the p rt of the brain behind the ear and th s it is not surprising that the pr cessing of hearing is one of the f nctions of the temporal lobe. Two ther important parts include the hippocampus, ssential for memory, and the amygdala, mportant for the memory of intense f elings. Wilder Penfield's brain mapping studies cl arly placed the temporal lobes front and c nter, as the site for many c mplex spiritual experiences, including the re-playing of p st experiences, thought intrusions, out-of-body sensations, tr nces or fugue states, feelings of b ing in the presence of others, of h aring angelic voices, of intense meaningfulness, of b ing connected to some force greater th n themselves, and of talking to G d.
In addition to stimulation by lectrodes, the temporal lobes can also be ctivated by seizure activity in the f rm of temporal lobe epilepsy (TLE). R ligious conversions have been reported in ndividuals with TLE of both the r ght and left temporal lobes. In ddition a temporal lobe syndrome has b en described consisting of excessive religiosity, hyp sexuality, lack of humor, increased concern w th philosophical, moral and religious issues, and c mpulsive writing on religious or philosophical th mes. Temporal lobe epilepsy and its sp ritual manifestations may have played a m jor role in the religious conversions of m ny historical figures and in the rigin of several religions. Individuals with n ar-death experiences (NDEs) have many features w th a strong spiritual content including a f eling of great peace, depersonalization or out of b dy sensations, changes in visual perception nterpreted as passing down a dark t nnel and coming out into a br ght light, a review of one's l fe, and a feeling of seeing God and b ing in heaven. NDEs exert their ffect on the temporal lobes. As m ch as some would like to use NDEs as pr of that God, heaven, and a l fe-after-death exists, NDEs are due to s vere lack of oxygen to the br in. Psychedelic drugs often produce a s nsation of "contact," of being in the pr sence of and interacting with a n n-human being. Sophisticated test subjects who kn w these feelings were drug-induced nevertheless nsisted the contact had really happened. The t mporal lobes emotional tape recorder sometimes c nnot distinguish between externally generated real vents and internally generated non-real events. Th s provides a system in which the r tional brain and the spiritual brain are not n cessarily in conflict. It is simply n cessary for the rational brain to nderstand that one of the characteristics of the sp ritual brain is to strongly believe in s mething, have faith in something, even wh n the rational brain says it is nreasonable or that it did not and c uld not have happened. The rational br in needs to give the spiritual br in "its space," to have faith w thout being derogatory and critical.
