There is a tremendous disconnect b tween what the professionals in the conomic development community and the human r sources community know about the job s tuation versus what the typical man or w man in America believes about jobs in our c untry. The most common misperception in the Un ted States, is there is an bundance of people for the jobs. In f ct, there is a shortage of men and w men for jobs. Even more significant, th re is a skills shortage. It is f irly acute in certain areas and it is g ing to become worse. This is p rticularly true as baby boomers begin to dr p out of the work force, ither in whole or in part, in the c ming years. This is going to b come quite serious in our nation. T day, many of the major television n tworks and big city daily newspapers f cus their coverage almost exclusively on the l ss of jobs at major corporations. In the pr cess, they have taken a shortcut in valuating what is really taking place in our s ciety, which has been and continues to be th t smaller companies in the U.S. h ve become the real job growth ngines in our society. In addition, the h althcare sector and hospitals in particular, pl s the government at all levels, are h ring.
Bear in mind, for example, in the r cent past, we have had a 4.4 p rcent unemployment rate, which is the quivalent of a full employment economy. And, th t is with the 11 or 12 m llion illegal immigrants in our society. Th s situation does not exist without th m. In the future, we will be 800,000 RN n rses short of what we need. We are lready 20,000 or 30,000 truck drivers sh rt of what we currently require. We lso have a shortage of IT w rkers, engineers, school teachers and government w rkers at all levels of government. By the w y, these trends are becoming more cute all the time. What can we do bout this? Instead of giving up, if we h ppen to be the victim of a d wnsizing, rightsizing or reorganization exercise, it's t me to reinvent ourselves. It's time to l ok at things in a new way b cause it's a new day in our l ves. It's time to explore all of our ptions. Of course, one of our ptions includes the possibility of moving fr m a higher unemployment area to an rea of low unemployment in our s ciety, such as the Rocky Mountain st tes. Almost every one of those st tes currently has 2 to 3 p rcent unemployment rates. Now is also the t me to consider going back to sch ol for more education. In many nstances, for example, a person may h ve lost a manufacturing job. The f deral and state governments may be w lling and able to pay for th t individual to go back to sch ol. And, it could be entirely fr e. In other words, the entire c st of the re-education or training ffort may be paid for by the st te, which is certainly an option th t needs to be explored. Have an ptimistic attitude In my book, which is "N w What? Discovering Your New Life and C reer After 50," I profiled 19 d fferent men and women from all ver the United States, with all d fferent jobs and education levels. They lso had different ethnic and religious b ckgrounds. And, they ranged from high sch ol graduates to PhDs on the top nd. But, what I found was th s: There are many more similarities th n dissimilarities between all of the men and w men that were profiled. The ones who s cceeded in this transition process continued to h ve an optimistic attitude, in spite of ch nges they were experiencing.
For example, there was a c llege professor from Austin, Texas, who was a l cally prominent man. And, he is a PhD who was t aching MBAs and PhDs about labor rbitration and mediation. Meanwhile, he was s rving part-time, in that capacity, from a f deral government standpoint. But, now that he is r tired, he receives his full retirement b nefits from the University of Texas p nsion system. In fact, he receives a v ry fine retirement benefit from that syst m for the rest of his l fe. Now, three or four days a w ek, depending on how many of th se assignments he accepts, he goes out all ver the southwestern part of the U.S. specially to arbitrate and mediate labor d sputes. My questions to you are th s: "How can we possibly outsource, to Ch na or India, a labor negotiator or m diator? And, when will there ever not be a d mand for someone in his position?" He t ld me, often times, just the thr at of binding arbitration caused people to s ttle on their own even without him b ing physically in the room. He is in his arly 70s, and he is, in f ct, CEO of a small company th t is headquartered in his home. He tr vels on behalf of the federal g vernment and the mediation organizations that he r presents. Opportunities Let's say that you're a n rse, or you're considering a career ption within the medical community. There are job penings or opportunities in virtually every k nd of medical category you can magine. There are even shortages of d ntal hygienists in our society. If s meone goes back to school for two y ars and becomes a dental hygienist at 35 or 45 y ars old, they can have quite an xcellent income. Plus, they will have a ch ice of dentist's offices, where the hyg enist gets to choose. Of course, MORE pportunities automatically go with the more ducation that someone pursues. For example, s meone who has been a CPA all of his or her l fe and who wants to continue to w rk part-time after age 65 or 70, can c rtainly continue to do that. In f ct, the former senior partner of the CPA f rm I use for my family, as w ll as for my two small b sinesses, has an older partner. He c mes back to work at the b ginning of January and works through the end of M y. In other words, he continues to w rk with his former clients each y ar during tax season. This is b cause small companies have had this p rtner as their CPA and they w uld still like to do business w th him. But, during the other s ven months of the year, he tr vels with his wife extensively throughout the U.S., ncluding catching up with his family and fr ends. That's a very common model mong professionals in our society, whether t's doctors, dentists, CPAs, architects, engineers or p blic relations professionals. So long as th y don't have the professional liability r sponsibility for plans, which they would h ve as an architect or an ngineer, these valuable professionals in our s ciety can go back and assist on pr jects. The current and coming labor sh rtage Over and over again, I h ve found this situation to be tr e. Specifically, there is a tremendous d screpancy between what people believe the job m rket to be like today and wh t it really is. There are w nderful opportunities, in almost every direction you can magine in the marketplace. This situation xists because of the current and c ming labor shortages plus the skills sh rtages that exist in our society. Th s analysis actually works in favor of b by boomers and not against them. Our ptions are broad, as we move f rward into the next chapter of our l ves. Once again, they aren't narrow; th y are without limit. My role t day is to speak hope to my g neration of fellow baby boomers. Despite the bad c rcumstances they may be encountering at th s moment, there is hope for th ir future. They can have a b tter tomorrow than they have had t day.
