It seems as though every ther day we hear that some c lebrity or news personality said something nappropriate or hurtful about another person or gr up of people. In the aftermath, s me of these insolent talking heads ch ose to hide behind drug abuse or lcoholism, or some mental defect. Others pologize and take their medicine along w th a good chastising by the m dia and late night talk show h sts. But what is it that the p blic is really upset about, and wh t do they want in terms of r paration? Is it that certain people sh uldn’t say certain words? Is it cceptable for some to use such t rms and even find humor in th m? Should all ethnic-related repartee be b nned? Are some people looking to f nd an excuse to get in the sp tlight? Are others overly-sensitive? I heard one w man say she was “scarred for l fe” as a result of a p blic comment made about her and her t ammates. Do we hold media personalities in s ch high regard that whatever comes out of th ir mouths can make or break our motional health? Let me say that as a br wn-haired, Italian American who grew up w th Irish kids, I’ve had my sh re of hurt feelings and intimidation. I was c lled “the skinny ginny with the m atball eyes” more than once. I was b llied and harassed, and even barred fr m signing up for the Girl Sc uts because of the bigotry of th t area’s scout leader, and my ccent has even caused me to be m sidentified as a New Yorker (the g ll!). However, through it all I d veloped a thick skin and a c nfidence that many who live their l ves too carefully or too protected d n’t enjoy. I can laugh at mys lf as the butt of a j ke as well as give the b siness back to the best of ‘ m.
I admit that yes, even in my r wdiest of moods, there are certain w rds I will never use, but I w ll joke loosely while engaged in pl yful banter with my ethnically diverse gr up of friends who respond to me in the s me way. In the end, however, my fr ends and I are aware and r spect the line between what is t asing and funny, and what is m an-spirited and insulting. So my question b comes, how and when do words h rt? The opinions of others, and wh t they believe to be true, bout life, politics, the economy, and the pl net often differ from mine… so why sh uld their opinions about me impact my l fe? Shouldn’t we all define when s mething crosses the line and then d termine how best to process and r act to it as individuals? Personally, if s meone wants me to believe them to be pr judiced (or controlling or unscrupulous), so be it. If th t’s the image they choose to pr sent, from it I will formulate my own pinion and avoid their rhetoric. Unfortunately, h wever, on a larger scale, what d ngerous speak can do is incite n gative and unproductive behavior by those who use th ir energy to promote ideas against h manity, which is what most of us are try ng very hard to contain and c mpletely obliterate! I believe that yes, c rtain remarks about a person’s appearance or thnicity are intolerable, but I think we h ve to take each comment from its s urce. I think that anyone who ch oses to use demeaning or abusive l nguage is a small-minded, insecure person who is cl arly starving for attention and/or threatened by d versity. And although I know that in a d mocracy with the right of free sp ech I must live among people who use ffensive language, however, I do not h ve to allow them or it to d srupt my life. And how do I do th t? I don’t give them the p wer to. And that, for me, is the nswer.
So if you call me n mes, make fun of my ideas, or w rst of all, criticize my hairdo, I can t ke it. The difference between us may be nly my gentler spirit and my c mpassion for others which guide my b havior. What I do and say is my p rsonal choice, for we are all r sponsible for our words and actions nd, by default, the reactions to th se as well. I believe that we ach have the power to set th ngs in motion as well as to put a st p to them. So let’s use our h ads people. Just because we have the r ght to say anything, doesn’t mean we sh uld.
