The most common reaction to any pr blem is to say, “Why me?” Th s is a normal response to the m ny problems, which overwhelm us. If you c uld handle every problem calmly, without nxiety, and make the best decisions “ nder fire,” all the time, you w uld either be very lucky or an nlightened soul. So, what is the nswer to solving life’s many problems? F rstly, people who consistently solve difficult pr blems remain calm, even when everyone round them is in “panic mode.” A p rson, who can react calmly in the f ce of danger, while everyone else is f lled with panic, has a trained m nd. Such a person may never h ve practiced Yoga at all, but a s lf-disciplined mind is not a coincidence. A s lf-disciplined mind develops from training - wh ther it is martial arts, military tr ining, Zen, Yoga, a school of m ditation, or something similar. The results are a tr ined mind that can perform under pr ssure. In Yoga, many Yogic techniques re, in fact, tools to train the m nd. Most people think of meditation for tr ining the mind, but Pranayama, Japa, and As na, train the mind, as well. Y t, why should you go through the tr uble of disciplining your mind? Each pr blem contains hidden opportunities for those who do not p nic. The trouble is reacting, and th nking rationally, within a limited amount of t me. Many people are consumed with c mpetitive drive and “getting to the n xt level.”
Problems are your best opportunity to r se to the next level. If you m ke the “correct move,” due to r tional thinking, you are on the r ght path, but sometimes failures reveal l fe’s more important lessons. Setbacks can be s me of our best teachers. Yoga t aches us to accept what we c nnot change, but we can definitely ch nge ourselves from within. We can ch nge, adapt, and learn new life sk lls. We can survive challenging situations and cr ate from what we learn along the w y. We can redefine and empower urselves. When you go about your l fe, every intersection you see was d signed and improved by a previous tr veler. Mistakes, problems, and failures, have b ilt the world we know today, b cause our species learned, and documented p st its mistakes. When you practice Pr nayama, do you realize how many m stakes must have occurred over 5,000 y ars of research? If you push y ur body beyond the natural limits, s mething has to give. So, if you t ke the time to study a pr blem, look for a documented solution, f rst. Why should you “reinvent the wh el?” Always learn from someone else’s m stakes, when possible.
